Capetonians taking part in the JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition on Friday 24 September 2021 (National Heritage Day) can turn their miles into smiles by supporting five Cape Town based charities.

Forming part of SA’s premier road running series, the RUN YOUR CITY Series, the JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition proudly supports the following five Cape Town based charities:  Die Burger Kinderfonds, Reach For A Dream, The Cape of Good Hope SPCA, help2read and Cotlands.

Started in 1957, Die Burger Kinderfonds is a non-profit organisation that assists children in the community that are in need of trauma counselling“Die Burger Kinderfonds has been a charity of the CAPE TOWN 12K CITYRUN since the event’s inception.  It is a privilege to be chosen as a charity of another RUN YOUR CITY Series event, this time the JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition,” says Suzaan Potgieter, Die Burger Kinderfonds Co-ordinator.  “The funds raised will be used to pay for different treatments (especially sessions with a psychologist) for children who were either victims of violence or who have been ill-treated and/or neglected.  The money helps to rehabilitate the children and give them a second shot at life.”

Established in 1988, Reach For A Dream seeks to inspire hope and help children to believe in the power of dreams“We are very excited to be selected as a beneficiary of the 2021 JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition,” says Natalie Lazaris, Reach For A Dream Business Head.  “We have been a beneficiary of the JOBURG 10K CITYRUN for many years and all the proceeds raised have really allowed us to positively impact the lives of children who are fighting a life-threatening illness.  The ability to raise funds again through this platform, especially during these very unforeseen times, is an incredible opportunity for us to continue the wonderful work that we do.  The funds raised will be used towards dream fulfillment for children between the ages of three and 18.”  For further information on Reach For a Dream please visit:  www.reachforadream.org.za

Established in 1872, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is the founding society of the SPCA movement in South Africa and is the oldest animal welfare organisation in the country. A registered non-profit organisation and Public Benefit Organisation, the society relies on the support of concerned individuals and corporates to continue operatingAccording Belinda Abraham, Cape of Good Hope SPCA Spokesperson, whenever and wherever people suffer, animals suffer by default.  “This is true of the current pandemic too.  The economic impact of the lockdown is apparent in the increased need for our veterinary welfare services, the decline in donations and the increase in the numbers of animals being surrendered to our facility.  In addition to this, fundraising has been made very difficult under lockdown conditions and has led to the cancellation of our own signature events and many of the mass public participation events that we generally capitalise on.  It costs the Cape of Good Hope SPCA on average R110.00 per day to provide a safe sanctuary for a rescued cat or dog – that’s R3300.00 per dog/cat per month!  It therefore means the world to us to have the support of the JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition.  Not just the financial support but the emotional support too.  It has been a difficult time for animal welfare and we are certainly feeling the love.”  For more information please visit:  www.capespca.co.za

A non-profit organisation, help2read’s mission is to erase illiteracy in South Africa’s disadvantaged communities, one literacy lesson at a time.  Since the organisation’s first one-on-one reading session in 2006, help2read has worked in over 400 schools and reached 23 000 children through their literacy programmes“We are deeply grateful to be included as a charity of the 2021 JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition,” says Nikki Knowler, help2read Business Development Manager.  “As it is part of the RUN YOUR CITY Series, it gives us an incredible platform for raising vital awareness about childhood illiteracy and unemployment in South Africa.  The funds that are raised will go directly to the help2read Literacy Tutor programme. On this programme young people are trained and placed in schools as Literacy Tutors where they assist children in grades R to 4 with their reading every day of the school year. During this year the Literacy Tutors gain work experience and are able to attend work readiness training. The goal of the Literacy Tutor programme is employment creation and literacy development.”  For more information on help2read please visit:  www.help2read.org

Cotlands is a registered non-profit early childhood development organisation with a rich heritage of 85 years of experience in serving young, vulnerable children. Cotlands’ vision is to see children thrive in their pre-school years by increasing their access to play-based early learning opportunities“Initially we had to close our early learning programmes to ensure the safety of practitioners and children during the pandemic,” says Dr Monica Stach, Cotlands CEO.  “Projects were placed on hold and the organisation experienced a decrease in corporate funding over the 2020/21 period.  To say that we need the support would be an understatement.  We are honoured to be selected as one of the preferred charities of the 2021 JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition.  The funds will be used to run our playgroup and toy library programmes, while the sponsorship will help us fulfil our mission to increase access to play-based early learning opportunities for children in disadvantaged communities.”  For further information on Cotlands please visit: www.cotlands.org
