A strong contingent of Boxer Athletics Club’s Elite Athletes will celebrate National Heritage Day on Friday 24 September 2021 by targeting fast times at the much-anticipated JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition!

A preeminent club for SA’s greatest middle-distance athletes, Boxer’s Elite Runners have been a force to be reckoned with at all the RUN YOUR CITY Series events (CAPE TOWN 12K CITYRUN, JOBURG 10K CITYRUN and DURBAN 10K CITYRUN) since the inception of the first event in 2015.

According to Rhyn Swanepoel, Boxer Athletics Club National Manger, the RUN YOUR CITY Series events are always at the top of the Club’s yearly calendar.  “Boxer athletes that have claimed gold in this series includes Thabang Mosiako, Stephen Mokoka, Elroy Gelant and Glenrose Xaba.  The last 18 months have been challenging with COVID playing havoc on races in South Africa.  Thankfully our athletes have still received their salaries and are still being supported as a result of the valuable commitment by Boxer Superstores.  We are also thankful to PUMA South Africa for their increased support, especially during this period.”

“Boxer Athletics Club is a very flexible club,” continues Swanepoel.  “Our athletes are just as at home on the track and XC as they are on the road, and that has given our club outstanding results.  We are excited to take part in the JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition on National Heritage Day.  Although virtual, the event has given our athletes something to look forward to and train towards.  The Boxer Athletics Club will be out in their numbers chasing their times.”

Boxer Athletics Club athletes that will be seen in action on the day will include (but are not limited to):  Bulelwa Semai, Tanith Maxwell, Elroy Gelant and Thabang Mosiako.

According to Bulelwa Semai (Mfuleni, Cape Town), it is great that runners still have the opportunity to take part in the JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition.  “It will just be a ‘different kind’ of race,” says Semai.  “I decided to enter because I will be celebrating much more than just running a virtual race.  I’m excited and nervous at the same time because entrants will not be running the same route.  Some might have flat routes while others might have a route that features hills.  I will really have to work hard.  I might be alone on the road, but I won’t be alone in the race.  I’m looking forward to running a faster time.  My goal is to dip under 40 minutes.”

“It’s great that runners still have the opportunity to experience ‘race like’ conditions at the JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition,” says Tanith Maxwell (Newlands, Cape Town).  “We might not be lining up on a start line with thousands of other runners, but we will still get to be part of an exciting event in a different kind of way!  The RUN YOUR CITY Series events have always been well organized.  While there are no mass participation events, I thought it would be a great opportunity to still get out there and be part of the series albeit in a virtual capacity.  The virtual race is a fantastic opportunity to compete against the best in the country, but in your own city!  It makes the event super competitive!”

According to Elroy Gelant (Potchefstroom), the JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition is a great initiative that has adapted to the current environment and still provides athletes with much needed competition.  “We are hungry to run again,” says Gelant.  “I’ve taken part in all the JOBURG 10K CITYRUN events.  It’s a fun and enjoyable event that lies close to my heart.  Although the traditional event cannot take place this year due to the pandemic, I am happy to show my support by taking part in the Virtual Edition.  As it’s a virtual event, the competition is guaranteed to be better as runners from all over SA can compete in their hometowns.  Whether you live in Cape Town, Joburg, Durban or the Karoo, you can now take on the Joburg event.  My goal will be to finish in the Top 5 fastest times.”

“I am excited to be part of the JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition.  Even though the event is virtual, it shows that the event organisers still care about the sport and about the athletes,” says Thabang Mosiako (Potchefstroom).  “The event gives me the perfect opportunity to gauge my current performance level.  The nice thing about the event being virtual is that I will be able to choose my own route.  I will therefore be able to ensure that it is fast and flat in order to run a fast time and beat other competitors.  My goal is to be the fastest finisher within an amazing time.”
