Durban’s leading performing arts groups join in on the fun:  Another iconic feature on the Absa DURBAN 10K CITYRUN route will be lively performances by Durban’s most entertaining performing arts groups including:  the DGC Marimba Band, Griffin Girls Rhythm Group, Westville Girls High School, Durban Combined Pipe Bands and the African Siziwe Performers.

“Our artists are bubbling with anticipation to celebrate the ability to once again share their talent with people,” says Calvin Human, teacher of the DGC Marimba Band, Griffin Rhythm Group and Westville Girls High School.  “Started in 2012, the  DGC Marimba Band has been going from strength to strength.  This all-female group lives to celebrate the joy of the marimba and passion for creating music together.  This will be the first time that the group performs at the Absa DURBAN 10K CITYRUN and to say that they are excited about the opportunity would be an understatement,” says Dana Hadjiev, Head of Music.

“Started in 2017, the Griffin Girls Rhythm Group is a lively all-female drumming group,” continues Human “These high-school girls have developed their passion for the African drum and the music it can make together.  The group will also make their debut at the Absa DURBAN 10K CITYRUN on Sunday and can’t wait to share the beauty of traditional African instruments on the South African stage.  Their goal is to be the heartbeat of the city.”

“Also ready to make their debut at the Absa DURBAN 10K CITYRUN, the Westville Girls High School group was started in 2015 and has been a force to be reckoned with in the realm of musical competition,” boasts Nicola Angelosante, Teacher in Charge.  “These high-school girls have developed their passion for music and movement and gone on to perform at many local festivals and community events. This group has become a close-knit group that shares a joy for performance and loves any opportunity to share their energy with the public.  This group is looking forward to hearing their music in the streets of their home city.  Runners can look forward to experiencing a high-energy display.”

No stranger to the Absa DURBAN 10K CITYRUN, the Durban Combined Pipe Bands will once again be an on route highlight this year.  “The Durban Combined Pipe Bands are a combination of members from the King Shaka Regiment (formerly Durban Regiment) Pipe Band, Queen Nandi Mounted Rifles (formerly Natal Mounted Rifles ) Pipe Band and the Durban Caledonian Society (formerly 1 Medical Battalion Group ) Pipe Bands,” says Ken Mustard, Pipe Major of the King Shaka Regiment Pipe Band.  “The various pipe bands have been going for a long time with the oldest band going back over 100 years. The members consist of pipers and drummers – the youngest in their teens and the oldest in their 70s – brought together by a common love of the music of the great highland bagpipe.  The Absa DURBAN 10K CITYRUN gives the pipe bands an opportunity to play for the people of Durban and in particular to encourage the participants in the run. This year it also shows that we will not be beaten by Covid and that everyone is working on getting life back to normal.  Runners can look forward to a good display of music performed on the bagpipe and drums.”
