Louis Van Gaal has set Manchester United their summer homework – land four players by next month- starting with Liverpool target Yevhen Konoplyanka.

In a big test for executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, the Reds new boss wants significant progress to have been made on recruiting Konoplyanka, Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger and ­Dortmund defender Mats Hummels by the time the World Cup 2014 ends – Van Gaal will be in Brazil as Holland coach.

Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman is also on the radar but he will not play again until next year because of a cruciate ligament injury.

Woodward came under fire for chasing Cesc Fabregas, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale for much of last summer – and ended up with none….
