Louis Van Gaal has set Manchester United their summer homework – land four players by next month- starting with Liverpool target Yevhen Konoplyanka.
In a big test for executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, the Reds new boss wants significant progress to have been made on recruiting Konoplyanka, Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger and Dortmund defender Mats Hummels by the time the World Cup 2014 ends – Van Gaal will be in Brazil as Holland coach.
Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman is also on the radar but he will not play again until next year because of a cruciate ligament injury.
Woodward came under fire for chasing Cesc Fabregas, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale for much of last summer – and ended up with none….
