It can be done.

That’s right. The United States can get out of the Group of Death at the World Cup. And it’s easier than you might think.

While it appears to be a daunting task to be one of two teams to advance to the knockout round from a group that includes Germany, Portugal and Ghana, try not to look at the group as a whole.

Instead of looking at the big picture, think small.

In World Cup play, the first game is everything. If a team can get three points it can dictate the way the remainder of the group schedule plays out. A team could clearly be the worst of the four teams, totally overmatched in every way, but if it wins that first game its chances of advancing greatly increase.

After Germany, Group G is fairly evenly balanced. And let’s give the national team some credit. It wouldn’t be the Group of Death without the United States, which moved up one spot, to No. 13, in the latest FIFA poll…
