Several Tygerberg MTB Club members will swop Durbanville’s trails with that of Stellenbosch on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 November 2022 when they take on SA’s ‘MTB Party of the Year’, the Savanna Origin of Trails MTB Experience that will start and finish at Coetzenburg Stellenbosch University on both days.
Founded in the early 90s, the Tygerberg MTB Club consists of just over 7000 members and boasts a trail network of roughly 185km of rideable trails on farmland in the greater Durbanville area.
“We pride ourselves on suppling mountain biking pleasure by providing a vast amount and variety of trails for all skill levels, and ‘type’ of riders,” says Morné Veer, Tygerberg MTB Club Executive Committee Member. “Mountain biking is seen as a safer alternative to road cycling for obvious reasons, but also provides the major benefit of being connected with natural beauty and surroundings. We are excited to take part in the Savanna Origin of Trails MTB Experience. The event has a great reputation, is well known among the mountain biking community and is always a treat especially if you are not a regular visitor to the Stellenbosch trails.”
“We see the advantages of both being competitive and just swinging the leg over just for the fun of it,” continues Veer. “In terms of our members tally, I’d say that more members will be riding their bikes for the pure joy of it, versus racing on the day. Timed events and races are great, but there are enough of them around to keep those who like to challenge themselves well entertained. I therefore believe that the Savanna Origin of Trails has the correct recipe, even more so if you consider the date that it slots into on the calendar. I must admit that under normal circumstances I am one of those avid racers that enjoys turning the cranks as fast as I can when taking part in events, so the Savanna Origin of Trails’ party atmosphere and more chilled approach will be a welcomed change for me. Our Tygerberg MTB Club members are really looking forward to closing off a busy year and taking it easy at SA’s ‘MTB Party of the Year’.”

ROUTE INFORMATION: The Savanna Origin of Trails MTB Experience is an individual 2-day MTB Stage Race that is ideal for all mountain biking enthusiasts. Entrants can choose between a Full Marathon and a Half Marathon. The Full Marathon caters for mountain bikers that possess a moderate level of fitness and experience, while the Half Marathon is the perfect event for mountain bikers that are looking to have a fun experience on route.
LIVE ENTERTAINMENT: A strong supporter of South African comedic talent, Savanna is excited to host a comedy night on Friday (after Race Pack Collection) and Saturday (as part of the Pub Ride) where a leading SA comedian will have mountain bikers and the public in stiches.
DRESS UP COMPETITION: Stage Two of the Savanna Origin of Trails MTB Experience (Sunday 20 November) will be Dress Up Day. The two best dressed riders (x1 male and x1 female) will receive R10 000 in cash as well as ten cases of Savanna (each).
