Imran Tahir won’t be a holding roll bowler

Pick Imran Tahir as the first choice spinner of the South African test team, but please don’t expect him to fulfil the holding role, said Paul Harris, a former left-arm spinner of South Africa.

Another former SA spinner, Pat Symcox, said he expected the national selectors to pick the legspinner Tahir for the tests against Sri Lanka.

He added that the new kid on the international block, the rookie offspinner Dane Piedt, will go on tour as a learning experience and will steal with his eyes.

“It would be a risk to select him as your specialist spinner in the first test. Ideally, you would use him as a second spinner or as a back-up. Even Shane Warne went for runs in his first test,” said Symcox.

“Piedt might always be plagued by the factor that he could be in and out of the side for a period, especially because JP Duminy is in the side. Duminy, like Piedt, is an offspinner and JP is not bad.”…
