Taking place across three cities (Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town) on Friday 09 August 2019 (National Women’s Day) the Totalsports Women’s Race has attracted a stellar line-up of female athletes including the likes of Jenna Challenor and Jenet Dlamini in Durban, Glenrose Xaba and Lebo Phalula in Johannesburg and Annie Bothma and Zintle Xiniwe in Cape Town.

No stranger to the Totalsports Women’s Race, Jenna Challenor (Durban North) secured gold at the Durban event in 2013.  “My 12 year old daughter won her first 5km race last year making the Totalsports Women’s Race really special to me,” says Challenor.  “It is an honour to run for those who are fighting for their lives.  I have lost a few friends to cancer so it is close to my heart.  The atmosphere on race day is electric.  It really is a fun morning out amongst so many beautiful women.  I have no expectations as I have been training for longer distances, but I am looking forward to getting some speed back into the legs while challenging my PBs.”

Although Glenrose Xaba (Embalenle, Mpumalanga) obtained gold at the Totalsports Women’s Race in Durban in 2018, she had to settle for second place in Johannesburg behind Mamorallo Tjoka in the same year.   For the first time since the event’s inception in 2001, the Totalsports Women’s Race will take place on the same day across three cities in 2019. As a result, Xaba had to choose between the three races with Johannesburg coming out tops.

“This will be the third time that I compete at the Totalsports Women’s Race in Johannesburg,” says Xaba.  “I am looking forward to a great race with a great vibe and support.  I love that the Totalsports Women’s Race supports women.  It is really special to be recognised as athletes.  My goal on event day will be to secure a spot on the podium, and maybe even win the race.”

Annie Bothma (Mouille Point, Cape Town) is hoping for a successful title defence in the Mother City on Women’s Day. “The Totalsports Women’s Race is very special to me as it was my very first 10km race back in the day,” says Bothma.  “Last year I got to line up after not competing in road races for three years while on a full scholarship in America.  Crossing the finish line first was ‘a dream come true’.  It is amazing that the Totalsports Women’s Race is hosted in honour of women and supports PinkDrive.  It is a great way to create and promote awareness about cancer in South Africa, and potentially beyond.  I am really looking forward to experiencing the vibe and seeing so many women unite on one day, competing in a sport that I am so passionate about.  My goal is to defend my title and finish in a good time.”

The 2019 Totalsports Women’s Race boasts a whopping combined Prize Purse of R123 600, that’s a total of R41 200 per city (Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town).
