A group of 15 Talisman Foundation facilitators and residents will toe the line at the Totalsports Women’s Race on Friday, 09 August 2019 as part of a fun team building exercise.
Established in 1979 in Parktown Johannesburg as a residential home for persons diagnosed with mental illness, the Talisman Foundation has since expanded its services and changed to a rehabilitation model that fosters independent living. Due to an increase in demand for their services, the foundation relocated to a bigger premises in The Hill, in the south of Johannesburg in 2003.
According to Minda Kruger, Psycho-Social Facilitator at the Talisman Foundation, the programmes have since become more independence and empowerment driven. “Our vision is to be the premier rehabilitation centre for individuals living with mental illness and addiction problems,” says Kruger. “We accomplish our vision by providing quality care for our residents, encouraging our residents to participate in their rehabilitation, keeping our residents connected to the outside community, providing an environment that is conducive to rehabilitation and promoting an environment of compassion and caring within the foundation.”
“This will be the second year that we participate in the Totalsports Women’s Race,” confirms Kruger. “We absolutely loved the experience in 2018. The event is the prime opportunity for our residents to engage with other runners, while building team spirit in order to encourage them to do more events outside of Talisman. We are excited to be able to further the cause for mental health awareness.”
Members of the Talisman Foundation team had the following to say about the Totalsports Women’s Race:
- “The Totalsports Women’s Race was fun and challenging. It got me up and I am going to keep fit,” says
Denzil Appalasamy.
- “The event was really enjoyable. It was inspiring to be amongst so many women running for a cause,” says
Trusha Bhana.
- “It was a great race, well organised and well supported,” says Wayne Reith. “The pink theme worked well,
both men and women were out in support.”
- “I entered the 2019 event because I am part of a fantastic institution, the Talisman Foundation,” says
Betsy Duvenhage. “We get encouraged to have a healthy mental life, which goes hand in hand with a
healthy physical life.”
