Somali cabinet introduces bill to curb illicit small arms trade

The Somali cabinet on Thursday (August 7th) introduced a bill designed to curb illicit small arms trade in the country, Somalia’s Radio Bar-Kulan reported.

The proposed bill will now be forwarded to parliament, where it is expected to pass, said Somali government spokesman Ridwan Haji Abdiweli.

The bill aims to reduce the sale and manufacture of arms inside Somalia, as well as curb the illegal import and export of weapons.

Trade in illegal weapons has skyrocketed since the collapse of Somalia’s central government in the 1990s, resulting in high levels of gun ownership.
