The centre is hosting the celebration a day early on Wednesday, 16 June so visitors can take advantage of the public holiday, and participate in the day\u2019s activities that highlight the plight and ecological importance of endangered crocodilians worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9.0pt; color: #7f7f7f;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">\u201cBecause crocodilians are the ultimate survivors and some of the oldest known species on the planet, many don\u2019t realise just how threatened they actually are today,\u201d explained Wade Kilian, Reptile Curator at Crocworld Conservation Centre. \u201cSome species, like the West African Slender Snouted crocodiles &#8211; for which we have a breeding programme at Crocworld &#8211; are even critically endangered, with only 500 to 1\u00a0000 left in the wild.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9.0pt; color: #7f7f7f;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">He explained that, as apex predators, crocodiles play an important role in the ecosystem: \u201cThey help prevent habitat degradation by overpopulation, regulating the populations of their preferred prey species. Hatchlings, which have only a one percent chance of surviving to adulthood, also serve as an important food source for other species such as birds, monitor lizards and even other crocodiles.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9.0pt; color: #7f7f7f;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">10 fast facts about crocodilians<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9.0pt; color: #7f7f7f;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">1. Crocworld resident, Henry, is the oldest known living Nile crocodile and he\u2019ll be celebrating his 121st birthday later this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9.0pt; color: #7f7f7f;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">5. Saltwater crocodiles are the largest crocodilian species, while Cuvier\u2019s Dwarf Caiman are the smallest. At Crocworld, Henry is the largest crocodile at just over five metres in length, weighing more than 700 kilogrammes. The second biggest is Colgate who, at just under five metres, spends his days with 36 wives at the centre!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9.0pt; color: #7f7f7f;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">6. The sex of the crocodile\u2019s offspring is determined by temperature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9.0pt; color: #7f7f7f;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">7. This year, in celebration of World Croc Day, the centre has announced some additional crocodile feedings and a lunch special.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9.0pt; color: #7f7f7f;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">&#8211; There will be crocodile feedings and an informative talk at 10am, 11am and 3pm. There is also a special American alligator feeding at 2pm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">&#8211; There will be juvenile crocodile handlings after each of the feedings in the Crocworld interaction area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">&#8211; Fish Eagle Caf\u00e9 is hosting a World Croc Day special: a saucy crumbed chicken burger with blue cheese and jalapeno sauce for just R50, and milkshakes at R20.
