Travel Warning – South Africa has a very high level of crime and crime is the primary security threat for travellers. Violent crimes, such as armed robbery, rape, carjacking, mugging, murder, torture and “smash-and-grab” attacks on vehicles, are frequent and affect both visitors and residents alike.

It is estimated that 18 people are shot and killed and between 18 and 72 survive gun violence every day in South Africa. This is according to 2009 figures.

Below is a link to a website monitoring news sources on a daily basis. As reported on this website less than a third of fatal shootings are featured in these media sources.
