First luxury seasonal camps to open in Kruger National Park

Chiefs Tented Camps is thrilled to announce the opening of their newest unique, and first of its kind accommodation product, Kruger Untamed: Tshokwane River Camp, located in one of the most animal dense – and previously unexplored by visitors to the park – locations of the iconic Kruger National Park (situated close to Tshokwane picnic site). Kruger Untamed: Tshokwane River Camp is the Kruger National Park’s first seasonal luxury tented camp concession. Available for stays during Winter months only, opening this coming July 2023, the camp is set to be the highlight for any Kruger Park enthusiast wanting a deeper connection to the wild with the unique aspect of the camp ‘popping-up’ and disappearing at the end of the season as though it was never there.

Kruger Untamed: Tshokwane River Camp is only an hour away from Skukuza airport, and it accommodates up to 60 guests in 30 luxurious tents. Tucked away in an immersive, unique dry-riverbed location, it is truly a haven for those seeking a profound connection with the untamed wilderness of the iconic Kruger National Park – allowing guests to disconnect and rediscover their connection to Mother Earth in the wild.

From arrival, guests are greeted with unexpected delights starting with the bespoke welcoming wooden deck beneath the native century-old Leadwood trees providing a relaxing environment where lanterns highlight the curves and edges of tree trunks, telling the stories of gentle giants rubbing their hides against its bark for relief from the African sun.

Throughout the summer season, the Ripape riverbed near the camp is filled with seasonal waters. However, when winter arrives, the once dry riverbed undergoes a magical transformation, becoming an enchanting spot where guests can indulge in sunset drinks, play yard games, take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear pool, and unwind and revitalize their mind and body, which is the essence of the camp’s offerings.

A whole array of activities awaits you at Kruger Untamed: Tshokwane River Camp – details of which can be found on our website – www.krugeruntamed.com

Tshokwane River Camp offers luxury tented suites that are 24m2 in size, specifically designed for a peaceful night’s rest for guests by providing fresh linen, comfy duvets, warm soft blankets, and hot-water bottles for added warmth in winter. Each tent also has a hot shower and toilet en-suite, further extending guests’ comfort.

“We wanted to offer guests the opportunity to experience the Kruger like never before… amid nature and completely enveloped in the sheer beauty of the bush, “says Allan Johnston, co-founder of Chiefs Tented Camps. Fellow co-founder, Lysta Stander, adds that “once you’ve experienced luxury camping in the Kruger, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better way to get that close to nature. Just reconnecting with yourself or a loved one, in a setting of sheer luxury and comfort.”

The rates for Tshokwane River Camp start at ZAR 5,950 per person per night sharing for SADC residents and ZAR 9,500 per person per night sharing for international guests. All rates are per person, sharing a room (tent), per night, and are valid until September 30, 2024.

Chiefs Tented Camps is part of the Motsamayi Tourism group, which brought into existence the now iconic Kruger Shalati – Train on the Bridge. “We are extremely excited to offer this incredible experience to visitors of the Kruger National Park, where the footprint on the ecological system is light, but the experience is deep.  We look forward to welcoming guests to Kruger Untamed: Tshokwane River Camp and are proud of the team delivering another unique and iconic product to the South African Tourism product line” says Jerry Mabena, CEO of Motsamayi Tourism.
