In celebration of Heritage Day, Chef Gary Coetzee has added a number of classic South African dishes to the menu on offer at the Bistro at Brookdale Estate in Paarl, to be enjoyed with a complimentary glass of Brookdale’s Mason Road wine. Available during the week of 19 to 24 September (lunch daily, and dinner Friday and Saturday night), diners may add traditional sides such as Chakalaka, Pap and smoor, or Braai mielie with harissa aioli and coconut to any of the dishes on the menu.
Lighter dishes on the special Heritage Day menu include Biltong soup with a matured cheddar cheese straw; or Bobotie served in an exciting, modern way with a crisp rice taco, with egg custard, spiced prune chutney and tomato salsa.
For main course, a plant-based option of a potato, spinach and feta pie is served with a chickpea, avocado and sun-dried tomato salad; or Dombolo, a hearty lamb stew with steamed bread and baby vegetables, which will be a perfect pairing with Brookdale’s recently launched Mason Road GSM, a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Petit Syrah.
End the Heritage feast with Chef Gary’s take on ‘Milk Tart meets Hertzoggie’, a coconut and cinnamon custard tart and apricot gel, with honey and apricot gelato and cinnamon crumb. Or indulge in a platter of South African cheese, including Cremezola, Gay’s Prince Albert, Belnori Ash Log and Dalewood Brie, complemented by a glass of the limited-release Mason Road Cap Classique to celebrate all things South African.
For those wanting to make the most of a long weekend in the winelands, an overnight stay in the luxury of the Brookdale Manor House is on offer to SA residents at R3450 per room, including breakfast, as well as a complimentary Wine Tasting for two at the Tasting Room.
