In July 2018, the resort experienced a large fire which caused extensive damage at the popular resort.
The dining room, the bar, the conference room, the Boma and the kitchen were completely destroyed by the blaze.

The dining area was constructed around what once was the focal shady tree in the outdoor seating area. All the décor from lighting to the huge painting in the dining room was created by local artists and crafters and the finished design is bright, airy, authentic, open and truly welcoming” states CEO, Gavin Castleman.

Sure to impress even the jaded traveller, its new look bar provides a place to share stories of the day, after which make your way in just a few steps to the stunning dining room and then head out to relax at the new Boma area around the camp fires flickering flames.
So be sure to head to DumaZulu Lodge and Traditional Village which also offers the most authentic Zulu cultural experience in Southern Africa. In a Zulu kraal forming part of a ‘living museum’, you will witness the manufacturing of spears, shields, clay pots, intricate beadwork, basket-weaving, the magic of the sangoma (witch doctor) bone-throwing and spectacular Zulu dances.
DumaZulu – meaning ‘Thundering Zulu’- is the largest Zulu village of its kind and is the only tourist Zulu village to be opened by Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini – twice with the official opening and again when the King opened the Bird Aviary on March 27, 2015, placing the royal Zulu stamp of approval on the resort.
Although many guests visit DumaZulu to experience the ‘living museum’, many also overnight at the resort, staying in one of 27 unique huts or rondavels or in self-catering units. Recent upgrades include the construction of six additional rooms, new white linen with accent throws as well as bathroom renovations.
Each of the huts has an exterior that reflects one of the nine different tribes of Southern Africa – including Zulu, Swazi, North Sotho, Xhosa, Venda, Tsonga and Ndebele. Each hut has a modern with a private bathroom and dressing-room.
DumaZulu offers braai facilities, a swimming pool, jungle gym, snake park and crocodile pool. Open vehicle game drives, tours and cruises on the nearby Lake St Lucia can be arranged for those wishing to explore the game reserves of Zululand (Hluhluwe / Umfolozi and the Isimangaliso Wetland Park).
