Photo: Supplied<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;The first team was unbeaten during the week and we had our toughest match in the final against Pretoria University, whom we defeated 19-8,&#8221; said Asvat. &#8220;The second team had a comfortable 21-7 win over North-West University in their final.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added that it was extremely satisfying to continue their success on the squash court.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The players have worked really hard on and off the court and deserve the success which has come their way.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In addition, we need to thank coach Mike Bester for all his work in preparing the players.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After being runner-up last year, Alexa Pienaar won the individual title for the first time, defeating Tuks rival Hannelise Human 3-0 in the final.<\/p>\n<p>In the men&#8217;s section, Blessing Muhwati was defeated in the final but crowned Ussa champion because his opponent (Thoboki Mohohlo) is not studying in South Africa and therefore not eligible for the title.<\/p>\n<p>It was also Muhwati&#8217;s first title, following in the footsteps of teammate Kyle Maree, who won last year.<\/p>\n<p>UJ&#8217;s Pienaar, Maree, Muhwati and Kacey-Leigh Dodd were included in the Ussa team.<\/p>\n<p>The tournament was hosted by UJ at their Auckland Park campus and Asvat paid tribute to a number of staff members who contributed to the smooth running of the week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We would like to thank the UJ sport staff, head of sport Nomsa Mahlangu and the student accommodation and residence staff for all their support in making it a success.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In addition, the support services and security staff played a big role throughout.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Johannesburg continued to rule the roost in varsity squash when they won the University Sport South Africa title for the sixth year in a row in Johannesburg last week.
