{"id":61538,"date":"2026-10-05T20:24:04","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T18:24:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/more-sport\/nba-africa-and-quest-water-global-to-build-55-basketball-courts-in-the-democratic-republic-of-the-congo-in-honor-of-dikembe-mutombo\/"},"modified":"2026-10-05T20:24:04","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T18:24:04","slug":"nba-africa-and-quest-water-global-to-build-55-basketball-courts-in-the-democratic-republic-of-the-congo-in-honor-of-dikembe-mutombo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/more-sport\/nba-africa-and-quest-water-global-to-build-55-basketball-courts-in-the-democratic-republic-of-the-congo-in-honor-of-dikembe-mutombo\/","title":{"rendered":"NBA Africa and Quest Water Global to Build 55 Basketball Courts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Honor of Dikembe Mutombo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"press-body-in\">\n                            <span><br \/>\n                                                            KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of the Congo, October 5, 2026\/APO Group\/ &#8212;<br \/>\n                                                        <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u2013 Quest Water Global Named League\u2019s Official Infrastructure Development Partner in the Democratic Republic of the Congo<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u2013 Multiyear Collaboration Will Support NBA Africa\u2019s Commitment to Build or Renovate 1,000 Courts on the Continent Over the Next Decade\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>NBA Africa (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apo-opa.co\/4yDFj1a\" rel=\"noopener\">www.NBA.com<\/a>) and Quest Water Global, a socially responsible water solutions company, today announced a multiyear collaboration to build or renovate 55 full-size and 3-on-3 basketball courts across the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) by 2030 in honor of Dikembe Mutombo, the late four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer who served as the NBA\u2019s first global ambassador following his retirement from the league in 2009.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The collaboration will <\/strong>support NBA Africa\u2019s commitment to build or renovate 1,000 courts across the continent over the next decade and <strong>see Quest Water Global serve as the league\u2019s Official Infrastructure Development Partner in the DRC.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The collaboration tipped off on Tuesday, Sept. 29 with the unveiling of a new outdoor basketball court at Cercle Onatra, Kinshasa, where Mutombo began his basketball journey with Basketball Club Onatra before relocating to the U.S. \u00a0The court pays homage to Mutombo by featuring his iconic No. 55 jersey number at center court and is expected to serve thousands of youth from the local community each year. To celebrate the unveiling, NBA Africa hosted a Jr. NBA\/Jr. WNBA clinic for 80 local coaches.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the collaboration, a second court will be unveiled in Mutombo\u2019s hometown of Mbuji-Mayi in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDikembe believed basketball was a powerful tool for teaching young people discipline, teamwork, resilience, leadership, and service to others,\u201d said Rose Mutombo.\u00a0 \u201cMy hope is that this court, and many more to come, will help inspire future generations to embrace these values, pursue education, and discover the opportunities the game can create.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCollaborating with NBA Africa on this court build initiative reflects our shared belief that healthy, thriving communities need more than one thing \u2013 they need clean water, safe spaces, and the opportunity to grow,\u201d said Quest Water Global, Inc.
