{"id":52588,"date":"2024-03-03T11:23:27","date_gmt":"2024-03-03T09:23:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/football\/fifa-hails-international-football-association-board-ifab-decision-on-permanent-concussion-substitutes\/"},"modified":"2024-03-03T11:23:27","modified_gmt":"2024-03-03T09:23:27","slug":"fifa-hails-international-football-association-board-ifab-decision-on-permanent-concussion-substitutes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/football\/fifa-hails-international-football-association-board-ifab-decision-on-permanent-concussion-substitutes\/","title":{"rendered":"FIFA hails International Football Association Board (IFAB) decision on permanent concussion substitutes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"press-body-in\">\n                            <span><br \/>\n                                                            ZURICH, Switzerland, March 3, 2024\/APO Group\/ &#8212;<br \/>\n                                                        <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Decision is a \u201cvery important\u201d step, says Mattias Grafstr\u00f6m, FIFA Secretary General ad interim and Chair of The IFAB\u2019s Board of Directors; FIFA\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><em><strong>(<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apo-opa.co\/47FhOX1\" rel=\"noopener\">www.FIFA.com<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em><strong><em> to launch global campaign to raise awareness of concussion symptoms; Decision is among several law changes confirmed at the 138th Annual General Meeting.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The decision to make permanent concussion substitutes part of the Laws of the Game, taken by The IFAB at its 138th Annual General Meeting, was based on extensive medical research and out of concern for the welfare of the players.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think we\u2019re not afraid to take on responsibilities and we really want to base all our decisions on data and also medical advice,&#8221; said FIFA Secretary General ad interim Mattias Grafstr\u00f6m following the meeting in Loch Lomond, Scotland. &#8220;This is also the basis [on which] we took the decision today on the permanent concussion substitution, which I think is a very important step moving forward,&#8221; added Mr Grafstr\u00f6m, who was confirmed as the new Chair of The IFAB\u2019s Board of Directors.<\/p>\n<p>FIFA also confirmed that it would launch a global campaign to raise awareness of how to recognise the symptoms of concussion and treat them appropriately, and that it would continue to invest in gathering more medical expertise about concussions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there&#8217;s any doubt about any player\u2019s ability to continue due to a suspected concussion, then they should be taken off the pitch, they should be assessed properly,\u201d said Noel Mooney, Chief Executive of the Football Association of Wales. \u201cAnd the medical evidence we\u2019ve got suggests there is no amount of time that will allow that to happen and let them still take part in the game. And fundamentally, the protection of the players has to come first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cWhy would you risk a player coming back onto the field who may be concussed because the only tests you can carry out at the side of a pitch won\u2019t give you the concrete understanding of whether a player is concussed or not? So it\u2019s very simple.
