{"id":5213,"date":"2017-05-04T21:20:44","date_gmt":"2017-05-04T19:20:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/?p=5213"},"modified":"2017-05-04T21:20:44","modified_gmt":"2017-05-04T19:20:44","slug":"madibaz-star-jumps-to-new-heights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/more-sport\/madibaz-star-jumps-to-new-heights\/","title":{"rendered":"Madibaz star jumps to new heights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bestmed NMMU-Madibaz high jump star Garth Ellis ticked yet another box when he took a silver medal at the USSA Championships in Cape Town last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My plan going into the season was to break the Varsity Athletics record and to medal at both the SA senior and USSA champs,&#8221; said the human movement sciences student after his jump of 2.10m.<\/p>\n<p>Ellis started the season off in fine form when he jumped 2.05m to bag gold at the first Varsity Athletics meeting in early March.<\/p>\n<p>The lanky Madibaz athlete secured another gold when he cleared 2.12m &#8211; bettering the record by a centimetre &#8211; at the second meeting of the series a few weeks later.<\/p>\n<p>He went even higher last month when he equalled his personal best of 2.15m at the national champs in Potchefstroom &#8211; an achievement that secured him the bronze medal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now that I&#8217;ve equalled my PB I&#8217;m hoping to improve on it in the next few competitions,&#8221; said Ellis, who hails from Holland Park in Port Elizabeth.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve put a lot of effort into achieving all of this so it&#8217;s a nice feeling to have accomplished everything I wanted to this season.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the end of the day it&#8217;s all worth it because it shows that my training is paying off.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite having had little to no formal coaching, Ellis said he had taken advice from a number of coaches to improve his technique.<\/p>\n<p>He said working with his sprint coach, Gerrie Posthumus, had been especially helpful.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been doing high jump since I was in grade eight at Andrew Rabie High, but there are no specialist coaches in the Eastern Cape so I&#8217;ve mostly had to coach myself.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve done a lot of research and also made sure to listen to pointers from other athletes and coaches when I&#8217;ve taken part in meetings.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ellis, who dreams of winning the national and USSA championships, said his next goal was to compete at the World Student Games in Taipei in August.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I need to find an extra five centimetres to qualify,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although my ultimate goal is to one day make the Olympic team, I also have to focus on the smaller goals like jumping 2.20m.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bestmed NMMU-Madibaz high jump star Garth Ellis ticked yet another box when he took a silver medal at the USSA Championships in Cape Town last weekend. &#8220;My plan going into the season was to break the Varsity Athletics record and to medal at both the SA senior and USSA champs,&#8221; said the human movement sciences [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":58746,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"tdm_status":"","tdm_grid_status":"","fifu_image_url":"","fifu_image_alt":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[2049,2054,1783,1824,2099,1770],"class_list":["post-5213","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-more-sport","tag-athletics","tag-athletics-news","tag-bestmed","tag-garth-ellis","tag-madibaz-athletics","tag-nmmu"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5213","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/4"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=5213"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5213\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=5213"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=5213"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=5213"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
