Plastic touches us all, whether directly or indirectly, and it is imperative that we come together to be part of true sustainability when the opportunity (such as this clean-up) presents itself. We all have an important role to play in shifting South Africa away from a ‘take-make-dispose’ system to a circular economy by ensuring that valuable resources, such as PET plastic bottles, are diverted from landfill and collected for recycling. It is also important to raise awareness around responsible disposal of valuable recyclable materials which can be made into many useful things.”

“The important message that we would like to share is that there is no such thing as ‘away’,” continues Levy. “When we throw anything away it must go somewhere. A recent warning from the waste management industry stated that SA’s landfills are nearing ‘Day Zero’. As Capetonians, we understand only too well what that means, as we experienced the same warning with our water shortage. Capetonians can contribute positively by starting to separate their recyclables from their waste, like food waste and taking them to a drop-off site or leaving them in a clear bag for collectors on municipal collection day. This will help provide collectors with an income, while decreasing the filling of landfills with valuable recyclable materials.”

In support of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K City Clean Up, PETCO will sponsor gloves to protect those cleaning up and clear plastic bags made from recycled plastic (and are recyclable). This will ensure that the valuable recyclables and the litter will be easy to sort, and the recyclables can be responsibly taken to be recycled.
