{"id":42557,"date":"2021-09-14T19:39:11","date_gmt":"2021-09-14T17:39:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/?p=42557"},"modified":"2021-09-14T19:39:11","modified_gmt":"2021-09-14T17:39:11","slug":"junior-mountain-bikers-shine-at-2021-fedhealth-mtb-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/cycling\/junior-mountain-bikers-shine-at-2021-fedhealth-mtb-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"Junior mountain bikers shine at 2021 Fedhealth MTB Challenge!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 6<sup>th<\/sup> annual <strong>Fedhealth MTB Challenge<\/strong> got off to an action-packed start at the beautiful Blaauwklippen Wine Estate today, Saturday 11 September 2021.\u00a0 Families and newcomers to the sport had the opportunity to join in on the fun by taking on the <strong>15km Fun Ride<\/strong>, while junior mountain bikers got to test their skill at the <strong>Kids Event<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Fedhealth MTB Challenge 15km Fun Ride<\/strong> featured a total climb of 250m.\u00a0 An easy rideable route made this event ideal for newcomers to the sport.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Koorzen (12) from Bellville set a blistering pace in the men\u2019s race crossing the finish line first in a time of 47 minutes 57 seconds.\u00a0 \u201cThe race was very nice,\u201d says Koorzen.\u00a0 \u201cI wanted to win today and wasn\u2019t too worried about the competition.\u00a0 I enjoyed the single track the most.\u00a0 I\u2019ll definitely come back to the Fedhealth MTB Challenge in 2022.\u201d\u00a0 Camryn Marais came in second, while Nathan Fatti finished third.<\/p>\n<p>Eliz McIntyre\u2019s finishing time of 01 hour 03 minutes 16 seconds secured her the top spot on the podium in the Women\u2019s Race.\u00a0 Jayde Oates came in second, while Sharyn Marais finished third.\u00a0 According to Oates (Bloubergstrand) the 15km Fun Ride was awesome.\u00a0 \u201cThe single track was really cool and there were fun sections through the trees.\u00a0 It was great to be out, around people and on my bike just having fun.\u00a0 This is the second time that I take part in the event.\u00a0 I\u2019ll definitely be back next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A highlight on the SA mountain biking calendar, the <strong>Fedhealth MTB Challenge Kids Event<\/strong> catered for ages 1 \u2013 13 with junior MTB enthusiasts choosing between a:\u00a0 500m (0-5 years), 1.5km (6-9 years) and a 5km (10 \u2013 13 years) event.<\/p>\n<p>Andreas Mouton (4) from Durbanville had a great time in the <strong>500m Kids Event<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m first,\u201d exclaimed\u00a0a very happy Mouton.\u00a0 \u201cThe event was fun.\u00a0 I went fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa Bosch (7) from Durbanville was the first female rider across the finish line in the <strong>1.5km Kids Event<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m super happy,\u201d says Bosch.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m very proud to come first.\u00a0 I\u2019ll definitely be back next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peyten Solomons (11) from Kylemore (Stellenbosch) was the rider to beat in the <strong>5km Kids Event<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u201cThis is the second time\u00a0that I take part in the Fedhealth MTB Challenge.\u00a0 It was a really nice event.\u00a0 I wanted to come first.\u00a0 My favourite part about mountain biking is the sprints.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Says Jeremy Yatt, Fedhealth Principal Officer: \u201cWe are delighted by the turnout at our Fedhealth MTB Challenge Kids Events. Aptly themed <em>Ride Open Spaces<\/em>, this year\u2019s event was a celebration of being active in the fresh air once again, something that\u2019s so important for kids as they grow into healthy, active adults. I could see young riders just having fun out there on the tracks at Blaauwklippen, and it made me smile.
