{"id":40901,"date":"2021-02-08T17:53:09","date_gmt":"2021-02-08T15:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/?p=40901"},"modified":"2021-02-08T17:53:09","modified_gmt":"2021-02-08T15:53:09","slug":"stenerhag-mcdougall-to-make-debut-at-stanford-mtb-classic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/cycling\/stenerhag-mcdougall-to-make-debut-at-stanford-mtb-classic\/","title":{"rendered":"Stenerhag, McDougall to make debut at Stanford MTB Classic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jennie Stenerhag and Amy McDougall will make their debut at this year\u2019s Stanford MTB Classic when it takes place at the Stanford Valley Guest Farm on February 27.<\/p>\n<p>The Western Cape-based race will take on the popular guided ride format and offer a 55km and 25km ride.<\/p>\n<p>Stenerhag, a former Swedish national marathon champion, said with the lack of events currently taking place, they were happy to hear that the Stanford MTB Classic guided ride was going to happen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never taken part in this event before, and I\u2019ve never ridden in the Stanford area, but have heard a lot of nice things about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people have told me how beautiful it is there and how good the single tracks are, so I\u2019m looking forward to going there for a ride finally,\u201d said the 45-year-old Stellenbosch resident.<\/p>\n<p>Stenerhag added that the guided ride format was a great initiative from organisers Overberg MTB Events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fantastic to see them doing what they can do to organise something for us to take part in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter to me if it\u2019s a race or a guided ride, I just want to do an event together with other cyclists again \u2013 it has been a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She felt that many people were missing the social side of being at an event and thought it was important to try and make something happen, even though times were tough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as everyone is following all the measures, I\u2019m sure we\u2019ll all be safe out in nature, so come and join us for a fun day out in the Stanford valley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McDougall, 31, said she was scouring the internet for a race or event and this one popped up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember doing the Greyt Escape in 2019 and loved the vibe and riding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpon emailing the organisers, they informed me that the event would take place in the form of a social ride.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m fully aware of the impact Covid-19 has had on event companies, so I thought it would be a great win-win to take part,\u201d said the former Wines2Whales and Berg &amp; Bush winner.<\/p>\n<p>She added that even though this was not a partnered event, she and Stenerhag felt it was a great idea to enter as friends and enjoy a fun weekend away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe may even race each other a bit because that\u2019s what we love doing!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll, however, be racing PE Plett together. I believe we\u2019ll be a great partnership because we have a similar approach to racing and similar strengths as riders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McDougall felt that it was fantastic to still have the Stanford MTB Classic take place as a guided ride instead of cancelling it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverberg MTB Events have found a way to make it still happen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis way, they get to showcase their trails and the event for future years. So much is out of our control right now, so making the best out of a bad situation is all you can do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, to all mountain bikers, let\u2019s support the organisers and join their Stanford MTB Classic guided tour.
