Self-proclaimed FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic addict Raymond Travers (West Rand) hopes to secure his 5th<\/sup> event medal on Saturday, 01 June 2019 when the 17th<\/sup> annual FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic gets underway at ATKV Buffelspoort.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Monster, as it\u2019s referred to by most mountain bikers, is characterised by tough hills, relatively technical single track and an all-round awesome experience in the race village at ATKV Buffelspoort,\u201d says Travers.\u00a0 \u201cIn the beginning I was relatively nervous about the race, but I have accepted that the Monster bites and that \u2018conquering the Monster\u2019 is a challenge.\u00a0 I have competed four consecutive years (2015 \u2013 2018).\u00a0 My goal every year is to \u2018properly\u2019 conquer the Monster.\u00a0 By this I mean no \u2018bike-hiking\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe race village at ATKV Buffelspoort is fantastic,\u201d continues Travers. \u201cThere is everything from coffee to bike maintenance and the race itself is so well marked and marshalled that it\u2019s almost impossible to get lost.\u00a0 I would recommend the FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic to other mountain bikers.\u00a0 It is tough and you definitely need what I call the \u2018Big-3\u2019 of mountain biking which is fitness (endurance) to ride the distance, skill to handle the technical single track sections and strength to actually get yourself and your bike to the top of the hills. My advice is to put in the training.\u00a0 If you think you\u2019ve trained enough, you probably haven\u2019t, so train some more. \u00a0Be sure to add technical, rocky climbs to your training regime.\u00a0 Remember that bike skills are just as important so brush up on them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have lots of special FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic memories,\u201d confirms Travers.\u00a0 \u201cOne of these memories is when Amy Beth McDougall<\/em> flew past me with a \u2018weekend warrior\u2019 panting and cursing behind her. I shouted to him \u2018I\u2019ll give you R1000 if you catch her\u2019.\u00a0 He tried to catch her but eventually fell back and when I got to him he asked me \u2018who is that girl\u2019.\u00a0 So I told him that Amy is one of South Africa\u2019s best female mountain bikers.\u00a0 If memory serves me correctly, Amy came second that year, behind Robyn de Groot.\u00a0\u00a0 I am counting down the days to my 5th<\/sup> FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic experience.\u00a0 I will make sure that I am ready to #ConquerTheMonster.\u201d<\/p>\n
