help2read has been welcomed as the event’s 4th charity in 2019.

“We are excited to support help2read’s drive to erase illiteracy in South Africa,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director Stillwater Sports. “For many the ability to read is considered to be a basic tool that is taught to all. This is, however, not always the case. We commend help2read for the imperative role that they fulfil in teaching people to read and ultimately empowering South Africans. We are proud to welcome the organisation as an event charity in 2019 and trust that runners will echo our excitement by showing their support.”

A non-profit organisation, help2read’s mission is to erase illiteracy in South Africa’s disadvantaged communities, one literacy lesson at a time. Since the organisation’s first one-on-one reading session in 2006, help2read has worked in over 223 schools and reached 17,500 children through their literacy programmes.

“Amongst other things help2read provides one-on-one reading support to learners in grade 2 to 4 (who are reading below grade level) twice a week for the duration of the school year,” says Nikki Knowler, help2read Corporate Business and Programme Development. “Our Volunteer Reading Helpers (VRH) Programme and Literacy Tutor (LT) Programme run in Diepsloot and Alexander in Johannesburg, in the 32 schools across Cape Town, in the Cape Winelands and in Khayelitsha. We also train and employ youth age 18 to 25 from financially impoverished areas as Literacy Tutors.”

“Being welcomed as a charity of the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN is a great opportunity for us,” continues Knowler. “By association we are given access to fantastic media coverage, an active means to fund raising and a chance to work with Stillwater Sports. We also feel that people who are active and healthy are excellent volunteers and role models for children. The FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN is well-run, fun and a great way to pull communities together.

Runners can get involved by signing up for help2read charity tickets for the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN, by making direct donations to help2read through our
