{"id":24449,"date":"2018-12-03T17:47:35","date_gmt":"2018-12-03T15:47:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/?p=24449"},"modified":"2018-12-03T17:47:35","modified_gmt":"2018-12-03T15:47:35","slug":"dieckmann-set-to-swim-for-ms-at-2019-sanlam-cape-mile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/press-release\/dieckmann-set-to-swim-for-ms-at-2019-sanlam-cape-mile\/","title":{"rendered":"Dieckmann set to swim for MS at 2019 Sanlam Cape Mile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Claudia Dieckmann will once again spearhead a group of swimmers that will take on the Western Cape\u2019s premier open water swim, the 5<sup>th<\/sup> annual Sanlam Cape Mile brought to you by Sanlam Investments at the majestic Eikenhof Dam (Elgin-Grabouw Country Club) on Sunday, 17 February 2019 in support of Multiple Sclerosis South Africa (MSSA).<\/p>\n<p>A keen swimmer, Dieckmann was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2011 at the age of 31.\u00a0 MS is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that interrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and body.\u00a0 Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Sanlam Cape Mile is such a well-run event,\u201d says Dieckmann.\u00a0 \u201cIn 2018 we had close to 30 people swimming as part of Team Swim4MS.\u00a0 We felt very welcome and the vibe created in the festival village was electrifying. The event definitely exceeded our expectations and was a great fundraising effort with close to R70\u00a0000 being raised for the cause. \u00a0Fundraising is always a goal, as having a chronic and potentially disabling condition like MS is financially stressful.\u00a0 Other than this, we hope to increase the awareness of MS at the 2019 event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want people to realize that the MS they may have witnessed in the past is not the same as MS today,\u201d continues Dieckmann.\u00a0 \u201cMS is not a death sentence.\u00a0\u00a0 With advancements in research and medication it is possible to live a fulfilling life.\u00a0 You just have to manage your symptoms.\u00a0 Management includes a variety of activities such as medication, a change in lifestyle and having a great Neurologist with whom you can discuss any concerns and possible treatment plans.\u00a0 Exercise is essential as it keeps the muscles moving, not to mention its psychological benefits.\u00a0\u00a0 I am a huge advocate of the benefits of swimming for MS.
