Durbanites are invited to join a fun \u2018City Clean-Up\u2019 drive on Saturday, 13 October 2018 where the streets of Durban will be cleaned in the prelude to the 2nd<\/sup> annual FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN that will take place on Sunday (14 October 2018).<\/p>\n

The \u201cDurban City Clean-Up\u201d will start at 07:00 on Saturday, 13 October 2018 with volunteers meeting up at the Durban City Hall.<\/p>\n

Event partner, PETCO (South Africa\u2019s national industry body accountable for managing the PET plastic industry\u2019s Extended Producer Responsibility) will provide the bags and gloves that will be used during the clean-up, while<\/p>\n

Sagren Moodley (a private local waste management contractor) will oversee the collection and sorting of the litter that will be collected.<\/p>\n

\u201cPETCO is thrilled to once again be involved with the FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN City Clean-Up,\u201d says Janine Basson, PETCO Stakeholder and Relations Manager.\u00a0 \u201cPETCO\u2019s mission is to grow the collection and recycling of PET plastic, after consumer use.\u00a0 We believe clean-ups have an important role to play in shifting South Africa away from a \u2018take-make-dispose\u2019 system to a circular economy by ensuring that valuable resources, such as PET plastic bottles, are diverted from landfill and collected for recycling.\u00a0 PET plastic bottle recycling in South Africa, which PETCO is responsible for, is doing very well. A 65% recycling rate was reached in 2017, which means 5.7 million bottles were collected for recycling each and every day in 2017.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile PETCO is a national programme, Durban is a key area that PETCO is working to establish a presence in,\u201d continues Basson.\u00a0 \u201cBy partnering with an event such as the FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN, we are able to move off the side-lines and into the thick of consumer and civic responsibility. Plastic touches us all, whether directly or indirectly, and it is imperative that we come together to be part of true sustainability when the opportunity (such as this clean-up) presents itself.\u00a0 PETCO will sponsor the bags and gloves that will be used during the clean-up.\u201d<\/p>\n

EXCITING ON ROUTE ACTIVATION<\/u><\/strong>:\u00a0 <\/strong>PUMA South Africa has thrown down the gauntlet challenging runners to \u2018Beat Bolt\u2019 <\/strong>at the 2nd<\/sup> annual FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN.\u00a0\u00a0 The \u2018Beat Bolt\u2019 Sprint <\/strong>requires speed.\u00a0 Be prepared to give your all over a 100m sprint.\u00a0 This section of the route will be timed.\u00a0 The runner (male and female) to clock the fastest time over\u00a0 the 100m will be rewarded with a PUMA shopping voucher to the value of R10\u00a0000.<\/p>\n

EXCITING NEWS<\/u>:\u00a0 <\/strong>Wilson Kipketer, former 800m world record holder, will participate in the 2018 FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN on Sunday, 14 October 2018.\u00a0 Kipketer who is employed by race sponsor, PUMA and won gold at three successive World Championships, has been brought to SA to inspire runners to bring their best to the event.<\/p>\n

You can join Wilson Kipketer for a 5km warm up run on Friday, 12 October\u00a0 starting at 5pm from Race Pack Collection\u00a0or meet him at a signing session at Race Pack Collection on Saturday, 13 October. After running the race on Sunday he will also be handing over the PUMA Beat Bolt cheque at prize giving.<\/p>\n
