{"id":22472,"date":"2018-09-21T16:52:01","date_gmt":"2018-09-21T14:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/?p=22472"},"modified":"2018-09-21T16:52:01","modified_gmt":"2018-09-21T14:52:01","slug":"jozi-cleans-up-for-fnb-joburg-10k-cityrun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/press-release\/jozi-cleans-up-for-fnb-joburg-10k-cityrun\/","title":{"rendered":"Jozi cleans up for FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jozi residents are invited to partake in a fun \u2018Joburg City Clean-Up\u2019 on Saturday, 22 September 2018 in the prelude to the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> annual FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN that will take the streets of Joburg by storm on National Heritage Day (Monday, 24 September 2018).<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cJoburg City Clean-Up\u201d will start at 08:00 on Saturday, 22 September 2018 with volunteers meeting up at Newtown Park.<\/p>\n<p>The event\u2019s waste partner, Recycle Drive (an on-site waste management company) will collect the litter while another partner, PETCO (South Africa\u2019s national industry body accountable for managing the PET plastic industry\u2019s Extended Producer Responsibility) will provide the bags and gloves to be used during the clean-up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecycle Drive focusses on zero waste solutions,\u201d says Chris Erwee, Managing Director Recycle Drive.\u00a0 \u201cWe are also involved in greening of events.\u00a0 We are very proud to be associated with the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN since its inception.\u00a0 This partnership is not just about being a supplier and ensuring it is a clean event, but it\u2019s also about giving back and going the extra mile helping where we can.\u00a0 Recycle Drive, on the day, will be responsible for cleaning the route, venue and VIP areas. Waste collected will be recycled ensuring that we deliver on our promise of a greener event! During the clean-up we will assist with supplying vehicles to remove the waste as well as staff to help.\u00a0 All the waste that can be recycled will be recycled through the correct channels and recorded for reporting purposes.\u00a0 The recyclable materials will be taken to a recycling transfer station for further processing. We believe clean-ups have an important role to play in shifting South Africa away from a \u2018take-make-dispose\u2019 system to a circular economy by ensuring that valuable resources, such as PET plastic bottles, are diverted from landfill and collected for recycling.\u00a0 PET plastic bottle recycling in South Africa is doing really well \u2013 a 65% recycling rate was reached in 2017, which means a total of 2.17 billion bottles were collected for recycling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to the bags and gloves that we will be sponsoring for the clean-up, we will also sponsor spot prizes which will include t-shirts and caps made from recycled plastic bottles,\u201d continues Basson.\u00a0 \u201cBy partnering with an event such as the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN, we are able to move off the side-lines and into the thick of consumer and civic responsibility. To ensure the safety of runners, marshals and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) will be stationed along the route.
