{"id":22118,"date":"2018-09-11T17:51:09","date_gmt":"2018-09-11T15:51:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/?p=22118"},"modified":"2018-09-11T17:51:09","modified_gmt":"2018-09-11T15:51:09","slug":"bekker-83-celebrates-health-at-the-totalsports-womens-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/press-release\/bekker-83-celebrates-health-at-the-totalsports-womens-race\/","title":{"rendered":"Bekker (83) celebrates health at the Totalsports Women\u2019s Race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Totalsports Women\u2019s Race has become part of the lifestyle of 83-year-old Durban resident, Hester Bekker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRunning changed my life in a great way,\u201d says Bekker.\u00a0 \u201cAt the age of 70 I was told that I had heart failure.\u00a0 To overcome something so huge I knew that I had to keep going and keep my heart and body healthy and strong.\u00a0 Running allowed me to keep fit despite my illness and health issues.\u00a0 I started entering the Totalsports Women\u2019s Race to see how well I could do.\u00a0 I soon realised that I was very competitive.\u00a0 I really enjoyed the race and did really well.\u00a0 I entered every year to see if I could win in my age category and better my time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve taken part 8 years in a row,\u201d continues Bekker.\u00a0 \u201cThe vibe at the start of the Totalsports Women\u2019s Race is always exciting with runners eagerly awaiting the sound of the start gun.\u00a0 There is always loads of fun, laughter and chatter amongst the ladies and the entertainment is great.\u00a0 It\u2019s a fantastic event.\u00a0 I love that PinkDrive is the beneficiary.\u00a0 PinkDrive members come out on event day to create awareness for the cause, while teaching women to do breast examinations.\u00a0 The race and route has always been enjoyable and well supported.\u00a0 My goal is always to do my best.\u00a0 My advice to all runners is to never give up.\u00a0 Be sure to do your best in every race.\u00a0 With God you can do all things and overcome all obstacles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>EVENT INFORMATION<\/u>:\u00a0 2018 Totalsports Women\u2019s Race <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We run for various reasons.\u00a0 Irrespective of the reason, women from all walks of life were invited to \u2018run united\u2019 at the 2018 Totalsports Women\u2019s Race in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town in support of PinkDrive and to raise awareness around breast cancer.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"171\"><strong>Date:<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"356\"><strong>Venue:<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"171\">Sunday, 22 July 2018<\/td>\n<td width=\"356\"><strong>Durban: <\/strong>Kings Park Athletics Track<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"171\">Thursday, 09 August 2018<\/td>\n<td width=\"356\"><strong>Johannesburg:\u00a0 <\/strong>Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"171\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"356\"><strong>Cape Town:\u00a0 <\/strong>Grand Parade, Cape Town CBD<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong><u>2018 WINNERS<\/u>:\u00a0 <\/strong>Glenrose Xaba proved to be in a league of her own at the Totalsports Women\u2019s Race <strong>Durban<\/strong> (Kings Park Athletics Track).\u00a0 Xaba claimed gold in an impressive time of 33 minutes 41 seconds.\u00a0 Jenet Mbhele came in second, while Tish Jones finished third.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Johannesburg<\/strong>, Mamorallo Tjoka crossed the finish line first in a deserving time of 34 minutes 33 seconds.\u00a0 Glenrose Xaba came in second, while Cornelia Joubert finished third.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Cape Town <\/strong>race was won by Annie Bothma in a time of 35 minutes 20 seconds.\u00a0 Zintle Xiniwe came in second, while Aynslee van Graan finished third.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LIVE ENTERTAINMENT<\/strong>:\u00a0 In true celebratory fashion the Totalsports Women\u2019s Race has become known for its live performances by well-known South African artists.\u00a0 In Durban Kwaito sensation, Dladla Mshunqisi had the crowd on their feet.\u00a0 Jozi runners (and walkers) were treated to a memorable performance by Sho Madjozi, while Capetonians enjoyed a live performance by GoodLuck.<\/p>\n<p>This year each entrant received a fitted Event T-shirt, a finisher\u2019s bracelet and a Totalsports head scarf.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>PRIZE PURSE<\/u>:\u00a0 <\/strong>The 2018 Totalsports Women\u2019s Race<strong> (Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town)<\/strong> boasted a combined prize purse of R123\u00a0600.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>CHARITY SUPPORT<\/u>:\u00a0 <\/strong>The Totalsports Women\u2019s Race proudly supports PinkDrive, a Non-Profit Company (NPC) that is committed to improving breast cancer awareness, education, and providing and offering free services to the medically uninsured across South Africa.
