{"id":12372,"date":"2017-10-22T11:01:53","date_gmt":"2017-10-22T09:01:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/?p=12372"},"modified":"2017-10-22T11:01:53","modified_gmt":"2017-10-22T09:01:53","slug":"sa-hopefuls-ready-for-xterra-world-championship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/sport\/press-release\/sa-hopefuls-ready-for-xterra-world-championship\/","title":{"rendered":"SA hopefuls ready for XTERRA World Championship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ten XTERRA SA hopefuls will proudly fly the flag on Sunday, 29 October 2017 when they line up to take on the world\u2019s best at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xterramaui.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">XTERRA World Championship<\/a> in Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p>All eyes will be on the Elite Men\u2019s race where SA\u2019s golden boy, Bradley Weiss (Stellenbosch), will be gunning to make his mark.\u00a0 \u201cThis will be the third time that I race at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xterramaui.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">XTERRA World Championship<\/a>,\u201d says Weiss.\u00a0 \u201cI competed in my first XTERRA in 2011 and went to the World Championship for the first time in 2014.\u00a0 There have been many highlights throughout my triathlon career, but my two proudest achievements would be winning our National XTERRA SA Title in 2016 and winning the XTERRA European Final in Denmark earlier this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am hoping to execute the race that I know I am capable of,\u201d continues Weiss.\u00a0 \u201cI feel I have paid my dues at this stage and have the necessary experience not to make the same mistakes.\u00a0 If I can cross the finish line knowing that I have executed my best race I will be very satisfied. The competitive nature of this race is second to none. I love how close the battle is each year.\u00a0 My goal is and always has been to win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other XTERRA SA Warriors that will battle it out on route will include:\u00a0 Gary Thomas (19-24 age group), Chris Visser (19-24 age group),\u00a0 Martin Havenga (25-29 age group), Zane Coetzee (25 \u2013 29 age group), Sylvia van Tromp (35-39 age group), Frederic Magnin (40-44 age group), Brenton Ashby (45-49 age group), Sean David McCarthy (50-54 age group) and Jacobus Verster (60-64 age group).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love taking part in any outdoor activity,\u201d says van Tromp (Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng).\u00a0 \u201cXTERRA allows me to see South Africa and explore the world.\u00a0 I am proudly South African.\u00a0 I hope to enjoy every minute at the XTERRA World Championship. \u00a0\u00a0My goal is to podium in my age group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Ashby (Hout Bay, Cape Town) it\u2019s an honour to represent South Africa at the World Championship.\u00a0 \u201cThis will be my first time competing at the World Championship, but hopefully not my last.\u00a0 I\u2019m motivated to do my absolute best on the day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoy XTERRA because it\u2019s a lovely challenge,\u201d says McCarthy (Parklands, Cape Town).\u00a0 \u201cI competed in my first XTERRA Full this year and placed 2<sup>nd<\/sup> in my age group.\u00a0 I am proud to represent my country and am hoping for a podium finish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Verster (Pretoria) competed in his first XTERRA at the age of 40.\u00a0 \u201cThe combination of exercise, nature and endorphins make me feel alive,\u201d says Verster.\u00a0 \u201cThis will be the first time that I go to the World Championship.\u00a0 I am very proud.\u00a0 My goal is to finish with a smile and tick this box on my bucket
