Durban was buzzing with activity on Sunday, 01 October 2017 when proud residents took to the streets as part of a \u2018City Clean-Up\u2019 drive in the build up to what is sure to become one of Durban\u2019s prized events, the FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are proud to partner with Stillwater Sports, the organisers of the \u2018Run Your City\u2019 series,\u201d says Blake Dyason, \u2018Joburg and Durban City Clean-Up\u2019 pioneer.\u00a0 \u201cOur \u2018City Clean-Up\u2019 drive started in Joburg in September at the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN before heading to Durban in October.\u00a0 Durban has the potential to be a tourism hub that hosts copious amounts of international events.\u00a0 The \u2018clean-up\u2019 started on the Promenade, next to the Bike and Bean Coffee Shop.\u00a0 We were pleasantly surprised by the support received from the KZN running community, local businesses and residents.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOur partner, PETCO (South Africa\u2019s national industry body accountable for managing the PET plastic industry\u2019s Extended Producer Responsibility) provided the bags and gloves that were used by the volunteers,\u201d continued Dyason.\u00a0 \u201cOur other partner, Planet Care, collected and will sort the litter.\u00a0 Now that the clean-up is done, we look forward to participating in the inaugural FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN this coming Sunday.\u00a0 I believe that the best way to see a city is on foot and that\u2019s exactly what the event is doing, allowing residents to \u2018explore their city\u2019 in a safe\u00a0environment.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Janine Basson, PETCO Stakeholder and Relations Manager, PETCO\u2019s mission is to grow the collection and recycling of PET plastic after consumer use.\u00a0 \u201cPETCO is proud to support the \u2018Durban City Clean-Up\u2019,\u201d says Basson.\u00a0 \u201cWe believe that \u2018clean-ups\u2019 have a significant role to play in shifting South Africa away from a \u2018take-make-dispose\u2019 system.\u00a0 Consumers must realize that they have the power to demand that their products are sustainably produced.\u00a0 This really does drive industry action in a big way.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have engaged in radical CBD \u2018Clean-Ups\u2019 in the last three weeks,\u201d says Zakhi Mkhize, Durban Inner City Programme Manager.\u00a0 \u201cWe went out every day with key departments and Inner City UIP from 10:00am\u2013 14:00pm from Sunday, 17 September.\u00a0 We have now scaled down the clean-up operation to target Monday, Wednesday and Friday.\u00a0 We were excited to join the Private \u2018Durban City Clean-Up\u2019 on Sunday as it\u2019s important for Government and Citizens to work together to make our city clean.\u201d<\/p>\n
The \u2018Durban City Clean-Up\u2019 saw the clearing of 99 bags of waste from the streets of Durban.<\/p>\n
