The 21-year-old seems to relish the tougher races. This was evident at the South African Cross Country Championships in Potchefstroom on Saturday, 09 September where she decimated both the 10km and 4km Senior Women’s fields in hot and dust conditions.

Judging by how Xaba was able to destroy her opposition on Saturday, it is safe to say that she just might be the athlete to beat on Sunday, 24 September. Although in exceptional form, she will not be able to rest on her laurels as the line-up for the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN shows some real depth.

“The Cross Country Championships titles have given me real confidence. Beating Kesa (Molotsane) in the 10km and dominating the 4km proved that I am in really good form at the moment. I am looking forward to Sunday, 24 September,” said Xaba. “It is, however, a strong field. So I won’t be able to take it easy.”

Cornelia Joubert, the Phalula twins, Lebo and Lebogang, Irvette van Zyl and Rutendo Nyahora will be snapping at Xaba’s heals. Neither of these athletes should be underestimated. Joubert has been on a roll in 2017, clocking personal bests in both the 10km (33:46 – Cape Town, 2 April) and Half Marathon (72:31 – Port Elizabeth, 24 June) the latter coming in winning the National Half Marathon Championships.

While Lebo Phalula has been off the circuit in 2017, sister Lebogang has been her usual dangerous self on the roads, finishing outside the top 5 only once in nine 10km races with three wins. Like Joubert and Xaba, she too likes the tough courses.

And then there is the ever dangerous Rutendo Nyahora. Ru, as she is affectionately known in the running community, was second in the 2016 edition of the race and, has been keeping the women honest in 2017 with some solid performances. Her most recent ‘best run’ coming in Pietermaritzburg (20 August) where she finished second behind Kesa Molotsane by 13 seconds and only a mere 3 seconds ahead of Van Zyl.

EVENT INFORMATION:

Iconic landmarks to look out for on the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN route will include: the Nelson Mandela Bridge, FNB Bank City, Constitution Hill, Mary Fitzgerald Square, Wits University, Neighbourgoods Market and Ellis Park Stadium to mention just a few.

Date:

Sunday, 24 September 2017 (Heritage Day)

Time:

08:00

Start Venue:

FNB Bank City Johannesburg

Finish Venue:

Mary Fitzgerald Square Newtown

Each entrant will receive a magnificent Event Performance T-shirt.

Charity Support: When entering online, runners can choose to support either or all three of the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN Charities: the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation, the Johannesburg SPCA and/or the Reach For A Dream Foundation.

Like our Facebook page: The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation / Johannesburg SPCA / The Reach For A Dream Foundation / Joburg-10K

Follow us on Twitter: @JoburgHeritage / @JhbSPCA / @joburg10K / @ReachForADream

Official hashtag: #J10krun

For more information on the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN email entries@joburg10k.com or visit www.joburg10k.com

About the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN sponsorship:

FNB Business is proud to be the title sponsor of the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN. This sponsorship forms part of our ongoing strategy to support local and community events that focus on a healthy lifestyle and family involvement. The FNB Bank City buildings are well-known and iconic buildings in the Johannesburg CBD and the precinct was recently revamped in 2015 with three lifestyle concepts of Work, Eat & Play in mind.
