SuperSport signing not a step backward: Furman

Having held out for an overseas offer than never came his way‚ Bafana captain Dean Furman on Tuesday night said his decision to sign a two-year contract with SuperSport United this week was in no way a step backward.

Furman is determine to prove that he was recruited to join the Tshwane side on merit and not because he was clubless.

“The club‚ through CEO Stan Matthews‚ made a compelling offer and I only see my coming to South Africa as a way to improve my football. I am not falling behind by any means‚ but I will get to explore different playing styles and improve my game even further‚” the midfielder said.

He has been searching for a home since May following his departure from Doncaster Rovers in the third tier of English football. Furman claimed that he had in fact decided not to extend his stay with Rovers and not the other way around.

The Bafana skipper tried his luck at Blackburn Rovers‚ who play in a division above‚ but was not offered a deal.

On his homecoming‚ he said: “There are a few things that also contributed to me wanting to come to South Africa. Obviously I have worked with Gordon Igesund when he was Bafana manager before and I was delighted to see them sign Bongani Khumalo‚ who is a good friend of mine from our time at Rovers. I spoke to him briefly and he told me he was enjoying his time here.”

Matthews‚ who flew to the UK to convince Furman to sign‚ said: “We are a competing‚ but underrated club in the Premier League and we needed a player of Dean’s quality to boost our brand and complete the squad we are assembling for this season.”

Furman could make his debut against Mpumalanga Black Aces in an away league game at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Saturday evening.
