Muizenberg police register multiple successes

South African Police Service (SAPS) officers in Muizenberg, Cape Town, made a total of 66 arrests for crimes varying from shoplifting to robbery during the past week, Western Cape police said.

“The largest number of arrests were made for drunken driving, which totalled 24,” spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said.

Eleven arrests were made for crimes involving violent behaviour, such as robbery, assault, domestic violence, and attempted rape. Arrests for possession of drugs and dealing in liquor came to seven. Four arrests were made for crimes involving weapons, including possession of a dangerous weapon and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

In addition, there were 19 arrests for crimes such as possession of a stolen motor vehicle, malicious damage to property, shoplifting, theft, outstanding warrants, reckless and negligent driving, theft of a motor vehicle, and illegal immigrants.

Last Saturday, Muizenberg SAPS, assisted by traffic police, law enforcement, and metro police, held two roadblocks in the Muizenberg precinct. The roadblocks, which commenced at 8pm, led to the arrest of 23 people for driving under the influence of alcohol, two for the possession of narcotics, and two for the possession of dangerous weapons, Van Wyk said.

Muizenberg SAPS station commander Colonel Ismail Daniels said roadblocks would be ongoing so as to eradicate the problem of drunken driving. He also believed that the increased police visibility in the area would have a positive effect in the fight against crime. He thanked all the other law enforcement agencies involved for their co-operation in this regard.
