Initially, it was decided that all schools will act as of 2020 and offer African languages from grade 1, but it is now brought forward to 2018.
The Department of Education said there are still 3 558 schools that do not yet offer a “formerly marginalized African language,” and the deadline to meet the target has been brought forward by two years.
The Western Cape is apparently the furthest away with the implementation of the plan, and only 1% of schools offering Xhosa now.
The purpose of the program is that everyone in the country will at least be able to talk to each other in African languages.
The department also plans to introduce history as a mandatory subject, but observers fear that it will only be propaganda to further blame the whites for all the mistakes of the past.
