The hiker fell 8m from a rock outcrop directly onto rocks and into a pool.  Luckily, he survived the fall, but sustained multiple spinal fractures. Apart from helping him out of the pool into which he fell, to prevent hypothermia, his hiking party kept him immobile and made the smart choice to call MSAR for help <\/p>\n<p>While an MCSA Gauteng rescue team and a paramedic rushed to assist, the crew of  South African Air Force (SAAF) 17 Squadron Oryx were given permission to prepare the helicopter for the rescue. Helicopter operations after dark have a higher risk profile and demand a high level of skill and experience from the crew and rescue members. Still, the injuries of the hiker were considered severe to face the risks of a night hoist operation instead of risking causing further harm by carrying him out of the kloof and over steep and rough terrain to the nearest road.
