South African Special Task Force Members involved in a shooting in the Mpophomeni area on the R617, Kwazulu-Natal. Eight armed suspects shot and killed.

A joint operation was conducted on December 10, at approximately 20:42 along the R617 Mpophomeni with Durban Crime intelligence, Durban Dog unit, Durban Organized Crime unit and STF.

The members were acting on information received with regards to suspects wanted for being involved in a Police Murder, ATM bombings and armed robberies. The information was that suspects were planning to bomb ATMs in Howick.

The STF attempted to stop the two identified suspect vehicles along the R617 app. 15 kilometers from Howick. Suspects opened fire on STF members using AK47 rifles and an R5 rifle.

A gun battle ensued resulting in 8 suspects fatally wounded and 1 injured. The injured suspect was taken to Hospital for treatment.

These weapons and vehicles were recovered.
3 x AK47 assault rifles
1 x R5 rifle
4 x 9mm pistols recovered on the suspects possession.
2 x hijacked motor vehicles were recovered.
A bag of already primed commercial explosives was also recovered.
