The police and other law enforcement agencies have intensified an ongoing anti-crime festive season operation aimed at making sure that BCMM citizens and visitors are and feel safe this festive season, more than 60 suspects were arrested for various crimes today.
Integrated anti-crime operations were held in Mdantsane, East London and King William's Town areas, led by Major General Henry Vos.
Police will continue to work closely with the law enforcement, provincial, municipal traffic services, immigration and other safety agencies this holiday season to make our roads, beaches, homes, hotels and entertainment areas safer for residents and visitors. The plans include ongoing random roadblocks, suspect and also undocumented persons tracing operations, search and seizure for illicit drugs, closing down of illegal liquor outlets and drunken driving to curb unnecessary fatalities on provincial roads. We hope that our collective efforts will make all roads safer.
Roadblocks on major highways and vehicle check points (VCP's) were held at the residential areas. More than 500 vehicles were searched and R60 000 traffic fines were issued by authorities during the high visibility roadblocks and VCP's for various offences.
Reinforced foot patrols, stop and searches for dangerous weapons were conducted in East London CBD, King William's Town CBD, Quigney, Southernwood, West bank, Greenfield, Cambridge CBD and Location, Nompulelo, Buffalo flats, Duncan Village, Amalinda, Highway taxi rank, Mzamomhle, Nondula, Slovo informal settlement, Shopping Malls, Business premises(spaza shops), ATM's, Petrol filling stations, Scenary Park, NU – 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 13, Unit-P, Cambridge, Macleantown, Vincent, Berlin.
Police also confiscated 100 mandrax tablets, tik, dagga, 30 knives, scissors and iron rod, pair of jean.
Detectives traced and arrested outstanding suspects. These charges ranges from, rape, warrant of arrests, possession of possible stolen goods, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, assault common, theft, Burglary business, Shoplifting, Malicious damage to property, Crimen injuria, Contravention of Immigration Act 13 of 2002. Four sheebens closed, four suspects aged between 22 and 46 years old arrested for selling liquor without liquor license and volumes of liquor were confiscated and destroyed.
The suspects are due to appear in the Mdantsane, Komga and East London Magistrate's Courts on various charges soon.
Major General Henry Vos thanked the operatives for their efforts, “The fight against crime continue, especially those crimes perpetrated against women and children. Furthermore, we would like to urge the community members to keep on supporting us by anonymously providing us with information. This will be treated with strictest confidentiality it deserves”, he said.
