Minister Nzimande to host Transport Imbizo in Western Cape

The Minister of Transport, Dr. Blade Nzimande and MEC for Transport and Public Works in the Western Cape, Mr. Donald Grant will host a consultative Imbizo with the community of the Western Cape, the City of Cape Town and surrounding areas on Saturday, 27 October 2018 at the Khayelitsha Athletic Stadium, Mandela Park.
 
Earlier this year, Minister Nzimande and MEC Grant undertook a site visit and in-loco inspection at the Paarden Eiland Depot to view damages to the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa’s (PRASA) infrastructure sustained during various arson attacks on Metrorail trains in the province.
 
Subsequent to this visit, the Minister engaged with various stakeholders and made an undertaking to convene a series of meetings which will include PRASA, the City of Cape Town, Trade Unions, Councillors, political formations and the community at large.
 
Through the Imbizo, the Minister will monitor progress and address the implementation of projects aimed at improving public transport services including the rail, bus and taxi industry in the Western Cape and also forge partnerships with stakeholders and the community. 
 
Minister Nzimande will also launch the much anticipated Railway Enforcement Unit to address the safety and security concerns that have been affecting Metrorail Western Cape services and infrastructure.
 
The Minister and MEC will also engage with the community on transport governance matters to find out first hand some of the concerns the community has.
 
The Minister will be joined during the imbizo by the Deputy Minister of Transport Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga, the outgoing Executive Mayor of the of Cape Town, Ms. Patricia De Lille, and senior national and provincial officials.
