Mdantsane Cluster police and traffics kick started their roadblock on the N2 near Fort Jackson, 63 traffic fines to the value of R63 600 were issued to motorists today.
The Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, the Honourable Weziwe Tikana together with the Mdantsane Cluster Commander, Major General Henry Vos led this festive season operation to ensure the continued safety of all our road users during this busy period.
An estimate of 159 motorists were stopped during the roadblock to prevent transporting of drugs, stolen goods, human trafficking, searching for illegal firearms and tracing for wanted suspects. Furthermore to enforce adherence to the road traffic laws by motorists and not to drink and drive during festive holidays.
Motorists must be warned that, unannounced roadblocks of this nature will be held during this season around the cluster.
In support of the 16 days of Activism Against Abuse of Woman and Children, pamphlets with Gender Based Violence messages were distributed at the roadblock. These pamphlets were encouraging community members to break the silence on domestic violence, reject stolen goods. Stop abuse of liquor and drugs.
The roadblock was headed up by the SAPS, Provincial traffics, BCM Traffics.
A total of 159 vehicles were stopped, 212 people searched, 63 traffic fines issued to the value of R56 600 for traffic offences and a bus was suspended to be on the road again.
Later the MEC Weziwe Tikana and Major Vos proceeded to join thousands of people including church leaders from defferent churches gathered at Winter-rose stadium for festive season prayer.
In an unrelated incident high visibility and patrols by our members led to arrest of two suspects for dealing in mandrax, following mandrax tablets that were confiscated from them.
The suspects are due to appear in the Mdantsane Magistrates Court soon for dealing in Mandrax once they are charged.
