The Harties Feral Cat Rescue caught, neutered and returned 68 cats to their outdoor homes during the second  Spayathon. This is the largest mass sterilisations Spayathon ever undertaken by the team and took place this weekend on 10-12 August 2018.

Harties Feral Cat Rescue, a non-profit company stabilised the Broederstroom Cat Colony during two spayathons this year.  “When we were informed of this colony in June 2018 we were shocked at their state. They were in dire need of food, shelter and medical assistance which through the kindness of strangers we were able to provide,” states Joanne Kontaxoploulos, founder of Harties Feral Cat Rescue and organiser of the spayathons.

Afrivet’s Drs Elizna Boag and Hanre Bredenkamp helped with the sterilisation of the cats. “It is a great privilege to be part of this event, the cat colony needs to be managed to avoid having an overpopulation in the area,” says Dr Boag, Business Unit Manager Companion Animals at Afrivet, “Various people from various backgrounds including a private veterinarian, Harties Feral Cat Rescue who put in all the effort to catch the cats and 2 other animal health companies who supplied vaccines, joined forces to make this event possible.”

Afrivet has also provided its uniquely safe anaesthetic and Sentry Cat Calming Spray. This helped to keep the cats calm during the event and after the procedure.

Dr Taryn Bright and Dr Le-Anne Kleynhans, private veterinarians committed to helping feral animals opened their clinic doors to host this event. Along with these doctors, there were also donors, sponsors and various other veterinarians who patiently dealt with the scared and angry kittens. In total 94 cats were sterilised during the two spayathons.
