{"id":85977,"date":"2022-05-11T23:00:07","date_gmt":"2022-05-11T21:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/southern-africa\/angola\/un-human-rights-expert-on-leprosy-to-visit-angola\/"},"modified":"2022-05-11T23:00:08","modified_gmt":"2022-05-11T21:00:08","slug":"un-human-rights-expert-on-leprosy-to-visit-angola","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/southern-africa\/angola\/un-human-rights-expert-on-leprosy-to-visit-angola\/","title":{"rendered":"UN human rights expert on leprosy to visit Angola"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/6dd84b353a161fe.jpeg\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><br \/><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-newsroom.com\/files\/download\/6dd84b353a161fe\" rel=\"noopener\">Download logo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The UN Special Rapporteur on the elimination of discrimination against persons affected by leprosy and their family members, Alice Cruz, will undertake an official visit to Angola from 28 April to 10 May 2022.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first visit by a UN Special Rapporteur to the country since 2016 and the first visit of the leprosy mandate to Africa,\u201d the expert said. \u201cI am looking forward to exploring the good examples, challenges and opportunities in the elimination of discrimination against those affected by leprosy, also known as Hansen\u2019s disease, and their family members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy visit will focus primarily on the issues of structural and interpersonal discrimination, anti-discriminatory policies; best strategies for stigma reduction and inclusive development about the specific population of persons affected by leprosy and their family members. I also intend to identify progress and gaps in the implementation of the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Documents\/Issues\/Leprosy\/PrinciplesGuidelines_EN.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">UN Principles and Guidelines<\/a>\u00a0and make constructive recommendations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The expert will meet government representatives, civil society organisations, health, law, and social sciences experts, as well as persons affected, their family members and their representative organisations. She will also visit several Hansen\u2019s disease communities in Luanda and Benguela regions, in order to learn their work and discuss their priorities.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of her visit, Cruz will hold a press conference to share her preliminary observations on 10 May 2022 (morning \u2013 time and venue to be confirmed).
