{"id":75989,"date":"2021-10-14T08:00:12","date_gmt":"2021-10-14T06:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/north-africa\/algeria\/u-s-embassy-and-ministry-of-culture-and-arts-hold-regional-cultural-heritage-site-security-conference\/"},"modified":"2021-10-14T08:00:13","modified_gmt":"2021-10-14T06:00:13","slug":"u-s-embassy-and-ministry-of-culture-and-arts-hold-regional-cultural-heritage-site-security-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/north-africa\/algeria\/u-s-embassy-and-ministry-of-culture-and-arts-hold-regional-cultural-heritage-site-security-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Embassy and Ministry of Culture and Arts Hold Regional Cultural Heritage Site Security Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/a538e386a1f233c.jpeg\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><br \/><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-newsroom.com\/files\/download\/a538e386a1f233c\" rel=\"noopener\">Download logo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>How can we work together to preserve Algeria\u2019s rich historic sites and artifacts for future generations?\u00a0 This was the question discussed at a Cultural Heritage Site Security conference from October 4-7.\u00a0 Twenty-one officials from the Algerian Ministry of Culture participated alongside 16 Ministry of Culture officials from Libya, Tunisia, and Egypt.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Embassy in Algeria and Algerian Ministry of Culture organized the conference, which was originally planned to take place in person, but was shifted to a virtual format due to COVID-19 considerations.\u00a0 American subject matter experts from the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the Federal Bureau of Investigations\u2019 Art Crime Team, and Homeland Security each gave presentations at the conference, as did Algerian experts from the Algeria Antiquities National Museum, Algeria Maritime National Museum, Ahaggar National Park, and the National Office for the Management and Exploitation of Protected Cultural Property (OGEBC).\u00a0 Participants engaged in stimulating discussions on best practices to preserve cultural heritage sites, with the aid of simultaneous interpreting into Arabic and French.<\/p>\n<p>During his opening remarks, U.S. Charg\u00e9 d\u2019Affaires Gautam Rana said: \u201cWe hope that during this conference, together we will think of new ways to protect our shared cultural heritage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Algerian Ministry of Culture and Arts Director of Cooperation Saadene Ayadi said: \u201cSafeguarding cultural property is a main priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The conference also marked the launch of a public awareness campaign about the importance of protecting Algerian cultural heritage sites.\u00a0 The conference is a component of a 2019 Memorandum of Understanding signed between the United States and Algeria on safeguarding cultural property and combatting looting.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the agreement\u2019s implementation, the United States recently donated equipment to the cultural heritage\u00a0site of\u00a0Tipaza including light poles around the Roman theater, outdoor cameras to monitor the grounds, and a wireless fire detection system for the museum.\u00a0\u00a0The United States is also working closely with Algeria on cultural heritage preservation projects including\u00a0Roman ruins in\u00a0Djamila\u00a0and\u00a0mosaics\u00a0in the Museum of Antiquities.<\/p>\n<p><i>Distributed by APO Group on behalf of Embassy of the United States in Algiers, Algeria.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-newsroom.com\/press\/us-embassy-and-ministry-of-culture-and-arts-hold-regional-cultural-heritage-site-security-conference?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source<\/a><br \/>\n<br \/>South Africa Today Africa \u2013 North Africa <a title=\"Algeria\" href=\"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/category\/north-africa\/algeria\/\">Algeria<\/a> News<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Download logo How can we work together to preserve Algeria\u2019s rich historic sites and artifacts for future generations?\u00a0 This was the question discussed at a Cultural Heritage Site Security conference from October 4-7.\u00a0 Twenty-one officials from the Algerian Ministry of Culture participated alongside 16 Ministry of Culture officials from Libya, Tunisia, and Egypt.
