{"id":72540,"date":"2021-08-17T07:30:06","date_gmt":"2021-08-17T05:30:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/north-africa\/algeria\/ebola-outbreak-in-guinea-red-cross-calls-for-a-response-that-is-faster-than-the-virus\/"},"modified":"2021-08-17T07:30:06","modified_gmt":"2021-08-17T05:30:06","slug":"ebola-outbreak-in-guinea-red-cross-calls-for-a-response-that-is-faster-than-the-virus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/north-africa\/algeria\/ebola-outbreak-in-guinea-red-cross-calls-for-a-response-that-is-faster-than-the-virus\/","title":{"rendered":"Ebola outbreak in Guinea: Red Cross calls for a response that is &quot;faster than the virus&quot;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrap\"><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>A network of more than 700 trained Red Cross volunteers has been activated as part of a first wave of response to the new Ebola outbreak in the rural community of Gou\u00e9k\u00e9 in Guinea\u2019s N\u2019Zerekore\u00a0prefecture.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Drawing from their\u00a0experience\u00a0during\u00a0the\u00a02014\u20132016 West Africa Ebola outbreak,\u00a0the\u00a0Red Cross\u00a0teams are rushing to contain further spread of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>Mohammed\u00a0Mukhier, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies\u2019 (IFRC) Regional Director for Africa said:\u00a0\u201cTime is of the essence.\u00a0The resurgence of the virus in\u00a0Guinea\u00a0comes at the worst possible time when\u00a0the country is\u00a0already\u00a0facing the\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0pandemic.\u00a0There are reasons for fear, but there are also reasons for hope.\u00a0While we are extremely concerned, we are also reassured by\u00a0the\u00a0lessons we learned from previous outbreaks, and by recent medical advances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than 11,000 people were killed during\u00a0the worst-ever\u00a0Ebola outbreak in history in 2014-2016.<\/p>\n<p>Mukhier said: \u201cWe need a response that is faster than the virus itself. Unless the response is swift, the health, economic and social impacts are likely to be immense for millions of people\u00a0in a country with\u00a0a relatively weak health\u00a0system, and\u00a0where\u00a0more than half of the population lives below the poverty line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response to this new outbreak, the IFRC and Guinea Red Cross have activated their \u201cepidemic\u00a0preparedness and response network\u201d\u00a0in the country.\u00a0Through this\u00a0system, Red Cross teams\u00a0have\u00a0been helping communities prepare and prevent the spread of diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Red Cross\u00a0volunteers\u00a0will provide services such as, contact tracing, psychosocial support, water, sanitation and hygiene and\u2014if needed\u2014safe burials.<\/p>\n<p>Guinea Red Cross has almost 2,500 volunteers across the country which gives it extraordinary reach into communities.<\/p>\n<p><i>Distributed by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apo-opa.com\" rel=\"noopener\">APO Group<\/a> on behalf of International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-newsroom.com\/press\/ebola-outbreak-in-guinea-red-cross-calls-for-a-response-that-is-faster-than-the-virus?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source<\/a><br \/>\n<br \/>South Africa Today Africa \u2013 North Africa <a title=\"Algeria\" href=\"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/category\/north-africa\/algeria\/\">Algeria<\/a> News<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A network of more than 700 trained Red Cross volunteers has been activated as part of a first wave of response to the new Ebola outbreak in the rural community of Gou\u00e9k\u00e9 in Guinea\u2019s N\u2019Zerekore\u00a0prefecture.
