{"id":72185,"date":"2021-08-11T19:00:09","date_gmt":"2021-08-11T17:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/west-africa\/burkina-faso\/fao-presents-field-research-resulting-from-the-training-of-veterinarians-in-field-epidemiology-isavet\/"},"modified":"2021-08-11T19:00:10","modified_gmt":"2021-08-11T17:00:10","slug":"fao-presents-field-research-resulting-from-the-training-of-veterinarians-in-field-epidemiology-isavet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/west-africa\/burkina-faso\/fao-presents-field-research-resulting-from-the-training-of-veterinarians-in-field-epidemiology-isavet\/","title":{"rendered":"FAO presents field research resulting from the training of veterinarians in field epidemiology, ISAVET"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/5753ddc3b95438f.jpeg\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><br \/><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-newsroom.com\/files\/download\/5753ddc3b95438f\" rel=\"noopener\">Download logo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)\u00a0gathered in a\u00a0two-day\u00a0interactive debate\u00a0(August 2 and 3)\u00a0on the Field research report workshop for the\u00a0training of veterinary professionals in field epidemiology\u00a0(ISAVET).\u00a0This workshop, which took place today\u00a0at the headquarters of the\u00a0Ministry of Animal and Fisheries Resources (MRAH)\u00a0, was held\u00a0in semi-face-to-face mode with the jury and the trainees face-to-face in the meeting room and international facilitators (regional and global ISAVET coordinators) in virtual mode (zoom)\u00a0,\u00a0organized by the FAO&#8217;s\u00a0Emergency Center for the fight against\u00a0\u00a0Transboundary Animal\u00a0Diseases\u00a0(ECTAD)\u00a0.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The objective of the workshop was to discuss and critique the research results of the trainees and to receive constructive technical feedback on the veterinary field epidemiology skills developed during the basic ISAVET training;\u00a0establish a cohort and a network of trainees ISAVET graduates in\u00a0Burkina Faso\u00a0and strengthen networks between partners to improve the prevention, detection and response to endemic animal diseases, at the\u00a0national level and across borders.<\/p>\n<p>ISAVET\u00a0aims to\u00a0provide &#8220;service training&#8221; to strengthen,\u00a0using a multisectoral approach, prevention,\u00a0detection,\u00a0early warning, rapid reaction,\u00a0reporting and response to animal diseases including transboundary, endemic, emerging, and\u00a0re-emerging\u00a0ones.\u00a0ISAVET\u00a0 trainees received, during four\u00a0months, four\u00a0weeks of lectures and tutorials\u00a0,\u00a0followed by\u00a0three\u00a0months\u00a0of field\u00a0 activities\u00a0 under\u00a0the\u00a0supervision\u00a0of\u00a0mentors\u00a0on\u00a0their place\u00a0of work.<\/p>\n<p>Research subjects addressed by trainees ISAVET<\/p>\n<p>Several research topics relating to the epidemiology of animal diseases were addressed by the 20 ISAVET trainees (18 veterinary officers from the Ministry of Animal and Fisheries Resources, and two officials from the Ministry of the Environment. retrospectives of cases of outbreaks of contagious bovine lumpy skin disease in the central western region of Burkina Faso in 2020, studies on the knowledge, attitudes and practices of poultry farmers of Newcastle disease from October to January 2021 or the study on the epidemiology of African swine fever in Kourweogo province in Burkina Faso are some examples of research topics.<\/p>\n<p>The opening ceremony of the workshop was punctuated by the address of the Director General of Veterinary Services, Dr.\u00a0Adama\u00a0Ma\u00efga, who located in his speech \u201cthe importance of this training for the reinforcement of the capacities of the surveillance and control of animal diseases and especially the expectations vis-\u00e0-vis the agents who have received this training and who are the key players in the field \u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said that &#8220;the government of Burkina Faso will continue to support the training of veterinary services and the establishment of a dynamic field research team.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With support from FAO, through ECTAD, the ISAVET initiative fills the need for capacity building and sustainability for the future of the region. Through ISAVET, the capacity of countries to predict, prepare for, respond to and overcome critical threats from emerging infectious diseases and transboundary animal diseases to human and animal health will be enhanced, taking into account the interface between human, animal and environmental health.<\/p>\n<p>The availability of field veterinarians and veterinary paraprofessionals in quantity and quality is essential in the field. This is all the more important as they have close ties to the local community and are often on the front lines in the event of an epidemic.
