{"id":68045,"date":"2021-06-02T01:00:21","date_gmt":"2021-06-01T23:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/central-africa\/dr-congo\/goma-volcano-eruption-displaces-415700-people-as-iom-prepares-response\/"},"modified":"2021-06-02T01:00:21","modified_gmt":"2021-06-01T23:00:21","slug":"goma-volcano-eruption-displaces-415700-people-as-iom-prepares-response","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/central-africa\/dr-congo\/goma-volcano-eruption-displaces-415700-people-as-iom-prepares-response\/","title":{"rendered":"Goma Volcano Eruption Displaces 415,700 People as IOM Prepares Response"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrap\"><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The eruption of Mount\u00a0Nyiragongo\u00a0volcano has forced more than 415,000 people, nearly half of whom are children, to leave Goma, according to thousands of individual assessments carried out by the International Organization for Migration\u2019s\u00a0(IOM)\u00a0Displacement Tracking Matrix.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>An estimated 86\u00a0per cent of the internally displaced, 114,000 people, have moved to Masisi; a further 77,000\u00a0have travelled to\u00a0Rutshuru. Roughly\u00a052,000 people have crossed the border into Rwanda.<\/p>\n<p>IOM\u2019s data collectors have spoken to 6,000 people\u00a0around the affected area. They report that an estimated 47 per cent of those on the move are under the age of 18,\u00a0and approximately 58 per cent are female.<\/p>\n<p>IOM classifies at least 28\u00a0per cent of the displaced coming from vulnerable groups.
