{"id":5874,"date":"2015-09-11T15:49:40","date_gmt":"2015-09-11T13:49:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/?p=5874"},"modified":"2015-09-11T15:49:40","modified_gmt":"2015-09-11T13:49:40","slug":"burundi-army-chief-escapes-assassination-attempt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/east-africa\/burundi-army-chief-escapes-assassination-attempt\/","title":{"rendered":"Burundi army chief escapes assassination attempt"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"section body_p_tags\">\n<p>Bujumbura\u00a0 &#8211; Burundi&#8217;s army chief survived an assassination attempt in the capital, Bujumbura, a military spokesperson said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Gunmen attacked the vehicle of General Prime Niyongabo &#8211; a supporter of President Pierre Nkurunziza &#8211; in the early morning hours, spokesperson Colonel Gaspard Baratuza told dpa.<\/p>\n<p>Niyongabo was unharmed but &#8220;his guards were killed, and some of the attackers were killed&#8221;, said Baratuza.<\/p>\n<p>The assassination attempt comes three days after the spokesman for one of Burundi&#8217;s main opposition parties was killed.<\/p>\n<p>The east African country has been gripped by violence since President Nkurunziza announced in April that he would seek a controversial third term in office.<\/p>\n<p>Street protests claimed about 80 lives, but Nkurunziza won a July 21 election that was boycotted by the opposition.<\/p>\n<p>More than 20 people were killed in violence in Bujumbura after the election, according to civil society groups.<\/p>\n<p>Fatalities have included people who opposed Nkurunziza&#8217;s third term, as well as a former army chief and a former intelligence chief.
