{"id":52622,"date":"2020-08-26T04:00:20","date_gmt":"2020-08-26T02:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/west-africa\/burkina-faso\/coronavirus-burkina-faso-records-one-million-internally-displaced-its-most-ever-as-violence-rages-amid-covid-19\/"},"modified":"2020-08-26T04:00:20","modified_gmt":"2020-08-26T02:00:20","slug":"coronavirus-burkina-faso-records-one-million-internally-displaced-its-most-ever-as-violence-rages-amid-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/west-africa\/burkina-faso\/coronavirus-burkina-faso-records-one-million-internally-displaced-its-most-ever-as-violence-rages-amid-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Coronavirus: Burkina Faso records one million internally displaced, its most ever, as violence rages amid COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrap\"><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>More than a million people have been internally displaced by the upsurge in violence in Burkina Faso, according to the\u00a0country\u2019s\u00a0National Council for Emergency Relief and Rehabilitation (CONASUR)\u00a0findings in an\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/rodakar.iom.int\/node\/4971\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">August 2020 report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>This figure represents a 100\u00a0per cent\u00a0increase compared to early 2020,\u00a0when\u00a0Burkina Faso counted\u00a0some\u00a0450,000 internally displaced persons.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne in 20 people is now internally displaced in Burkina Faso. This figure is alarming.\u00a0The majority of\u00a0displaced persons are women and children,\u00a0and their needs are enormous, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic which has upended an already complex and multifaceted humanitarian crisis,\u201d said Abibatou Wane, Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Burkina Faso.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Provinces in the\u00a0country\u2019s Sahel Region\u2013including\u00a0Sanmatenga\u00a0(118,570), Soum (105,116), Bam (42,388), Seno (19,205) and\u00a0Namentenga\u00a0(10,601)\u2013remain the main areas of origin of displaced persons.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe displaced communities\u2019 situation and needs require a greater commitment from the different partners to assist the hundreds of thousands of people who have lost everything, or almost everything when they fled their homes to save their lives,\u201d\u00a0IOM\u2019s Wane added.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Internally displaced persons\u00a0(IDPs)\u00a0who have fled their homes under the threat of armed attacks are often destitute as they seek safety. According to the CONASUR, their priority needs include shelter, food, health, cash for immediate needs,\u00a0and work.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many of us, we\u00a0women,\u00a0are raising our children alone. We need support to help us carry out income-generating activities to better care for our children,&#8221; pleads Fatima, a displaced woman who has been living\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0Youba\u00a0displacement site in the northern region for almost seven months. Her only wish today is to rebuild her life\u00a0safely and with\u00a0dignity.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>IOM, with the support of its partners, is working alongside other United Nations agencies to assist these populations in the Sahel, North, Centre-North and East regions. IOM provides displaced communities with emergency shelter and psychosocial support and conducts peacebuilding and social cohesion activities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As part of the COVID-19 response, the Organization also supported the 34 health centres in the North\u00a0and Sahel regions with COVID-19 protective\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/rodakar.iom.int\/fr\/news\/covid-19-la-r%C3%A9gion-du-sahel-renforce-son-dispositif-de-riposte-avec-l%E2%80%99appui-de-l%E2%80%99oim\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">equipment<\/a>\u00a0 and hygiene kits, and\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/rodakar.iom.int\/fr\/news\/covid-19-l%E2%80%99oim-mise-sur-l%E2%80%99engagement-communautaire-pour-lutter-contre-la-propagation-de-la\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">conducted\u00a0awareness-raising activities for the benefit of host communities and IDPs<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In June, IOM\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iom.int\/news\/central-sahel-iom-appeals-usd-378-million-continue-lifesaving-assistance-460000-vulnerable\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">appealed for USD 37.8 million<\/a>\u00a0to provide life-saving emergency assistance to 460,000 people in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger in response to the rising violence and multi-dimensional humanitarian crisis in the Central Sahel region.
