{"id":4981,"date":"2014-08-25T15:13:43","date_gmt":"2014-08-25T08:13:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/?p=4981"},"modified":"2014-08-25T15:13:56","modified_gmt":"2014-08-25T08:13:56","slug":"lesotho-defends-guptas-diplomatic-status","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/southern-africa\/lesotho\/lesotho-defends-guptas-diplomatic-status\/","title":{"rendered":"Lesotho defends Guptas\u2019 diplomatic status"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Maseru &#8211; Lesotho Prime Minister Thomas Thabane has strongly defended his decision to issue diplomatic passports to members of the Gupta family and rejected opposition demands to withdraw them.<\/p>\n<p>He said the diplomatic passports were essential in facilitating their work in securing investments for his country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have appointed them to market the country (Lesotho) in countries where they have influence\u2026 These people (the Guptas) are good friends of the ANC and we have good relations with the ANC,\u201d Thabane said in an interview with the Independent Foreign Service at his official residence on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was introduced to them by the ANC president (Jacob Zuma) and other ANC officials\u2026 I then appointed them to help scout for investment for my country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have influence in a number of countries that can help Lesotho.
