With 7.5 million people in need of humanitarian assistance and more than 6 million people living on the brink of famine, the <a href=\"https:\/\/u7061146.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=4tNED-2FM8iDZJQyQ53jATUf8P0kQNAx6n5NIoJ-2F9osw4-3Dyuna_4j4HIHxpscVu2zd2zCyc9uMA68wbPSio3hXguxQgxw5JQyiIMTpvFxoGaYGhexFl0CYvjXkHF2LPTuaTjcDjMFMZLZkM8BW62NXD1vBUtx1othQeDEwRfg9l54PMEyrkTf3sX-2B6IEtjgPQ2SBii4Mf9MVOm31YUzVy1K9yFBoe6a0-2FDFJoAjCakLGAJzz6aZBo-2B2rAZ6V5OVPYIWTOy-2F4EFF6qQGEBioIlQCq-2BDLtC8DRiCX7SQbyqQfsEB4iu0od38JGhzzWg3x8W9KZd-2Fc6SixXZuuyC4Bz0yf7ku2MyHyOSOpcmK6VJZDlMRsotVYmf-2BP7V0kCTRa4itOGz5YwzOeBEX-2FCwnkOBjBiHsnFPw-3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Rescue Committee<\/a> (IRC) \u00a0is calling for a rapid increase of funds to help mitigate the spread of the disease.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Less than half of South Sudan\u2019s health care facilities are functioning and many in operation are poorly equipped and understaffed. The IRC reaches 1.1 million people with health care services and other critical programming and has been training our health staff to recognize symptoms and safely isolate suspected cases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Caroline Sekyewa, South Sudan Country Director at the IRC, said,\u00a0\u201cThe people of South Sudan have already endured six years of terrible war, famine and a collapsed economy. The Unity government only just formed and are now faced with fighting this pandemic. The country has not had enough time to rebuild, and the health care system will not be able to withstand a rapid increase in cases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than 1.5 million people are internally displaced and almost 200,000 live in overcrowded, cramped camps without access to proper hygiene facilities. Only 34% of households in the country are able to access a borehole or tap stand in less than 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we do not act now, many will lose their lives. But, with funding deployed quickly, we can improve the health response, inform the community about the disease and work to mitigate the spread as much as possible, all while continuing our ongoing life-saving work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The IRC has more than 400 staff in South Sudan responding to the increasingly dire food insecurity crisis through its support for health, nutrition, reproduction health, women\u2019s protection and empowerment, child protection, and livelihoods and economic\u00a0recovery.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The IRC has launched a US <a href=\"https:\/\/u7061146.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=4tNED-2FM8iDZJQyQ53jATURjGwHRXnkXw3QHBuasrenZ66uthvzjab3AbhFvO9aX7x3heXnKFTe88pdBTLuRt0w-3D-3DMbU__4j4HIHxpscVu2zd2zCyc9uMA68wbPSio3hXguxQgxw5JQyiIMTpvFxoGaYGhexFl0CYvjXkHF2LPTuaTjcDjMFMZLZkM8BW62NXD1vBUtx1othQeDEwRfg9l54PMEyrkTf3sX-2B6IEtjgPQ2SBii4Mf9MVOm31YUzVy1K9yFBoe6a0-2FDFJoAjCakLGAJzz6aZHkIT8ktH2zpCninNV6AcvcPhDX4XEHFPPoeInryQq0WsRfxsuJ81qeolMYATiBS85utmJXxgr0QxRa3-2FTSKv0mZFzPaPD58DaSlhmg690Nt7LGrfo-2FhNVwdIH1mhw5qkk6z8PgrPcvjozM4df0U46FLej8hk-2BhfXFVUzndvobAA-3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$30 million appea<\/a>l to help us mitigate the spread of coronavirus among the world\u2019s most vulnerable populations.
