{"id":46050,"date":"2020-03-28T12:00:08","date_gmt":"2020-03-28T10:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/west-africa\/burkina-faso\/coronavirus-burkina-faso-international-organization-for-migration-iom-calls-for-increased-support-for-displaced-amidst-deteriorating-humanitarian-crisis-emergence-of-covid-19-in-burkina\/"},"modified":"2020-03-28T12:00:09","modified_gmt":"2020-03-28T10:00:09","slug":"coronavirus-burkina-faso-international-organization-for-migration-iom-calls-for-increased-support-for-displaced-amidst-deteriorating-humanitarian-crisis-emergence-of-covid-19-in-burkina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southafricatoday.net\/africa-news\/west-africa\/burkina-faso\/coronavirus-burkina-faso-international-organization-for-migration-iom-calls-for-increased-support-for-displaced-amidst-deteriorating-humanitarian-crisis-emergence-of-covid-19-in-burkina\/","title":{"rendered":"Coronavirus \u2013 Burkina Faso: International Organization for Migration (IOM) Calls for Increased Support for Displaced Amidst Deteriorating Humanitarian Crisis, Emergence of COVID-19 in Burkina Faso"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrap\"><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Amid the current COVID-19 outbreak in Burkina Faso \u2013 the\u00a0country\u00a0most affected\u00a0by the crisis\u00a0in West Africa\u00a0\u2013 the International Organization for Migration (IOM)\u00a0is\u00a0increasingly concerned about the impact the disease could have on those already severely\u00a0impacted\u00a0by\u00a0the ongoing\u00a0humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>IOM is scaling up\u00a0its response, recently providing\u00a0100 emergency shelters\u00a0to\u00a0some 700 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and Malian asylum seekers in\u00a0the north of the country.\u00a0Many of those forced to flee from\u00a0violence in Mali\u00a0in 2019 and 2020\u00a0have been\u00a0doubly\u00a0displaced\u00a0since seeking refuge in Burkina Faso\u00a0last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are concerned that increased displacement creates a fertile ground for more tensions among the population and leads to a spill-over of the conflict in new areas,\u201d said\u00a0Abibatou\u00a0Wane, IOM Burkina Faso Chief of Mission.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurthermore, poor hygiene conditions in displacement sites\u00a0severely\u00a0increase\u00a0the risk\u00a0that\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0may spread\u00a0within\u00a0displaced\u00a0communities,\u201d\u00a0added Wane.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Burkina Faso has\u00a0reported 152 cases of COVID-19, and four deaths, since the disease reached its territory.\u00a0Thus\u00a0far, no COVID-19 case has been reported in\u00a0any\u00a0displacement site.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In its\u00a02020\u00a0response plan, IOM appealed for USD 30 million to provide immediate assistance to populations in northern Burkina Faso. The Organization has already\u00a0begun to provide\u00a0emergency shelters and psychosocial support in the Centre Nord, Sahel and Nord regions.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Humanitarian Needs Overview, 5.2 million people are affected by the crisis in Burkina Faso\u00a0and\u00a0some 2.2 million people need assistance.\u00a0The humanitarian community requires USD 312\u00a0million\u00a0to meet the needs of the\u00a01.8 million people targeted\u00a0in\u00a0this\u00a0interagency response.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0deadly attack earlier this month (07\/03) in the\u00a0northern\u00a0villages of\u00a0Barga,\u00a0Dinguila-Peulh\u00a0and\u00a0Ramdolla-Peulh\u00a0left\u00a043\u00a0people\u00a0dead\u00a0and\u00a0seven\u00a0severely wounded.\u00a0Many\u00a0others\u00a0fled\u00a0\u2013 displaced\u00a0to\u00a0Ouahigouya, the region\u2019s capital.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nearly three\u00a0weeks after\u00a0that\u00a0attack, more than 6,000 people\u00a0from surrounding villages\u00a0today\u00a0also\u00a0are\u00a0displaced. This number comes on top of the almost 52,000 internally displaced\u00a0persons\u00a0registered in the region by\u00a0the\u00a0country\u2019s\u00a0National Council for Emergency Relief and Rehabilitation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An additional 3,000 persons are expected to arrive in\u00a0Ouahigouya\u00a0in coming days.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite collective advocacy efforts, the necessary additional resources are yet to be made available to implement life-saving interventions in\u00a0Ouahiguya,\u201d\u00a0warned\u00a0Wane.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The majority of IDPs in the region do not have relatives in the affected areas and lack access\u00a0to housing in host communities.\u00a0They\u00a0are seeking\u00a0shelter\u00a0among\u00a0populations\u00a0already struggling to meet their\u00a0own\u00a0basic needs.\u00a0There is an urgent need\u00a0for\u00a0food, emergency shelter,\u00a0water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH)\u00a0services, health and psychosocial support, and protection activities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who fled their villages and the\u00a0frontline of the\u00a0conflict are now living in dire conditions in the temporary collective site in\u00a0Ouahigouya\u00a0and surrounding host communities,\u201d Wane concluded.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To face this current situation, local and national authorities have identified a temporary site to host the newcomers.
